Marco's sparkling new label sets foot in the scene by bringing us V's highly anticipated new single. Accompanied by a remix from Canadian DJ Preach, let's see if this one can create a storm equal to Marco's earlier belters!
Of course we all know Marco from his magnificent V.Ision series, his singles 'Simulated', 'GODD' and the more recent 'Echnalava / Godchild' and 'Automanual'. His first artist album called Con:Fusion caused quite a stir throughout the scene, and was followed by the Combi:Nations compilation which featured 3 CD's loaded with tunes in true V style. Busy with his second artist album, he now releases vinyl number 1 of a 2-disc set containing two mixes of the first single from the album. Let's see what he did this time!
A-side: Original Starting off with a fast blend of percussion, the build immediately takes you into a somewhat dark journey, being amplified even more by a prelude to the very agile and deep bassline. One of the very cool things about this track are the Underworld-ish vocals (done by Benjamin Bates by the way!) that are being introduced on top of the other elements during the first mini-break. Telling us about a saturday morning, they fuse in tightly with the rest of the production, enabling the overall feel to become techy, yet very driving. Something that caught my attention right away when listening to the second part of the vox is the following sentence: "Saturday morning 9:21, you read of a war in the East that was won." Perhaps this refers to certain incidents in the Middle East during 2004? Anyway, constantly using small intervals during the build, a continuous bit of tension is being created. The main breakdown is being introduced by the addition of a strong hookline playing this very catchy set of chords. Combined with the ever rolling bassline, this just works out in a very nice way by creating a wicked climax. Tasty! Rating: 8/10
B-side: DJ Preach Mix While the original leans more towards techtrance, Preach has made this a more techno-ish interpretation mixed with some funky elements. With the percussion constantly filtering in and out, a neat amount of agility is being brought forward, especially when tiny samples of the vox are being injected in the track's body. An ongoing high synthie is being guided onwards by some really cool playing with the bassline; while it first consisted of just one note, it now changes constantly with slight hints to a full melody. Accelerating every millisecond, this mix definitely knows how to catch your attention. Although some people might say they find this a bit too monotone, I certainly find this a worthy addition to the vinyl because it enables the track to be played in a variety of sets, ranging from trance to the more accessible techno. Quite cool! Rating: 7/10
Conclusion:
Marco and his co-producer Benjamin Bates have once again proved that they are still able to create very inventive and original tracks. The A-side features that amazing bassline backed by the catchy riff and the cool vocals, while the Preach remix takes on a different approach by constantly building towards different climaxes. Rumours say that a second vinyl is going to hit the scene soon, including the Album Extended Version and a remix by Joy T-Suko... All in all a blasting first release on In Charge!
