The 2Play imprint is ready to behold another double dosage of dark and techy goodness on a vinyl. This has already been embraced by the likes of Marco V, Above & Beyond, Johan Gielen, Eddie Halliwell and Blank & Jones so read on...
The talented upcoming Dutch producer, Freek Geuze, takes on the guise of the Frisky Warlock for this new double track release. In a nutshell, the order of the day is strong, dark tech trance and also a touch of melodically influenced tech trance...
:: Frisky Warlock - Trespasser / Fingerprints :: 2Play Records :: 2PLAY009
A: Trespasser 'Trespasser' immediately grabs you with a strong and compulsive beat along with a lively and snappy set of percussion. The track is carried along by a thick continuous stream of bass in the background and constant hits of a coarse, techy sounding synth. The track gets a lot of its power and feeling from a synth which is soon introduced - a sustained and reverbed synth with a dark and sharp sound. That is, its a really great sound. It reminds me greatly of the one and only 'Flight 643' (I'll get back to this shortly). Another highly noticeable feature of this track is the huge breakdown / build up in the middle. Its pretty damned awesome really. A superbly constructed crecendo over a serious length of time, constantly thickening with some soaring backing synths, the cool sounding dark synth and some immense snare rolls. The drop is fantastic and a lot of people are likening it to Katana's 'In-Silence'. It is definitely quite similar to that, but I still liken it more so to 'Flight 643'. In turn, from a DJ's point of view, mixing out of 'Trespasser' into 'Flight 643' is seriously awesome stuff indeed. 'Trespasser' is a severe winner of a track. Fine, fine tech trance!
AA: Fingerprints 'Fingerprints' carries quite a different sound to the masterpiece on the A-side of this vinyl. Once it kicks off you hear some fairly standard sounding trancey bass riffs and chord sequences. You get a much lighter and uplifting sense from this side. The main lead synth element here is a rising scale played by a very airy yet bass-hinted synth. This adds to the light and uplifting feeling and makes everything seem a lot calmer and more tranquil. After a few listens you realise that this really is quite a chilled out mellow piece of trance which is enjoyable to listen to.
Conclusion:
This is a fantastic double track release from the Frisky Warlock! 'Fingerprints' gives us some nice mellowed out trance whilst 'Trespasser' just takes things head on and blows you and out of the water. Dancefloor eruptions? I think so!
