 The Australian company Vestax have released their latest product, the VRX-2000. A vinyl recorder for DJ's, producers and recording studios.
I guess all of you agree with me that the only real format for mixing is vinyl!
This new recorder is based on the same technology as the professional vinylpresses that costs $50000 and above, but has been scaled down to a 18kg product that looks kind of like a vinyl-player.
The product is mainly targeted at stand-alone-producers and smaller studios. Since it still costs about $8-9000 it's not a product for everyone, but the price might drop down to an affortable amount if it becomes popular.
The VRX-2000 works as any analogue recorder. You simply connect a sound-resource to it (cd-player, computer, minidisc etc.) and start the recording. The sound is cut/carved into the blank vinyl and you can listen to it in any vinyl-player immediately after.
The 12" vinyls can hold about 15 minutes of music per side and the lastability of such a record is estimated to about 80-90% of a professionally created vinyl. The sound-quality will not be of the very best quality, but more than good enough for a normal listener.
So, how much does it cost to record? A blank 12" costs about $20, but if you buy a large quantity you should get them for a reasonable price! In addition to that you need to change the cutting-head (a saphire-needle) after every 50 vinyl you create (or 25 double-sided ones). This costs about $250.
This means that the overall cost per vinyl you create rises somewhere above $20, which is quite expensive compared to a professional vinyl-press. In your costs you must also include all vinyls you have to trash before you get the recorder adjusted properly...since the quality depends on room temperature, humidity, placing and angle of the cutting head. These factors all make an impact on the recorded sound.
I guess this will be a product for the most addicted vinyl-freak DJ's who just HAVE TO bring the latest and hottest tunes on vinyl.
