Dutch techtrance maestro Woods is back to bring us some more 'Musical Madness' as he calls it himself. His profound techy style has been highly succesful, so let's see if he's able to continue the tradition!
After releasing 'Static State' under his own name last year, it has been rather quiet concerning Woods releases during the last few months of 2004. Luckily, 2005 has already brought us some tight new material: his collaboration singles with Jesselyn called 'Flora' and 'Fauna' were released on Silicon, both being true dancefloor destroyers. A brand new Marcel Woods remix for the classic by Three Drives, 'Greece 2000', has just been brought out as well, and with Tiësto caning his upfront track 'Advanced' it seems like he's back in full force! 'Cherry Blossom' has been in Woods' sets for quite a long time now, so let's check it out!
A-side: Cherry Blossom Swift kickdrums, a nicely rolling & altering bassline and a clear use of percussion serve as the entrée, being accompanied soon by an eerie sounding vocal snippet and some mysterious backing strings. With the track constantly building towards different climaxes, a very techy synth enters which is playing an ongoing set of notes throughout the build. While some percussion is disappearing smoothly, a crafty string sound enters in, enabling the listener to enter the breakdown without any hassle. With just the strings remaining, the overall vibe here is still very mysterious: a high, almost emotional sounding synth sound plays this up and down going melody, just until it fades away completely and makes place for complete silence... And that's exactly where the fun starts. A truly amazing melody starts playing, which will undoubtly generate goosebumps all over the place! Another high and somewhat emotive sound has been used again, creating a super energetic experience. With the energy just bursting out of it, this builds and builds using loads of tight filter FX and other gimmicks, just until the immensely powerful climax commences. Everything blends together perfectly, inducing this to be the ultimate 'go nuts' moment. It's very cool to see that Marcel has tried to create a more trancy feel in this one, and I think he definitely succeeded. A peaktime floorkiller! Rating: 9/10
B-side: Beautiful Mind The first few elements of this second track on the vinyl reminded me just a bit of Marcel's singles with Jesselyn. A pumping bassdrum and a very industrial, but supercool and mighty sounding synth forces its way through the track, creating a rather dark atmosphere. Stabbing bass notes guide as the intro for a very nice set of vocals, which are being introduced in a mini-break to hear them in full effect for the first time. With the strong and blasting synth from the beginning re-entering, multiple small floorkilling moments are being brought forward. After the vox have been built out a bit more in the breakdown, a splendid & techy sounding melody emerges which will certainly result in some true hands-in-the-air moments. Of course the unstoppable megasynth from the build is here again as well, resulting in a very fat sounding climax, stuffed with cool layers of basses and the already tight sounding percs. Though the build-down is rather long in this one, it's still a very and original sounding track. Banging stuff! Rating: 8/10
Conclusion:
Let's cut the hassle and just say it: we've got ourselves two magnificent tracks here. 'Cherry Blossom' stands out because of its more trancy approach with the amazing breakdown and main melody, while 'Beautiful Mind' has a nice dark vibe in it, being strengthened by the fine vocals and an amazing use of multiple very meaty synths. All in all a superb release by Marcel again!
