The third release on the Yakuza is a new track from one of The Freak's side projects, 'Exo', coming in with a remix from tech-trance duo Mark Norman...
:: The Freak Pres. Exo - Above The Clouds :: Yakuza :: YAK003
A: Above The Clouds (Original Mix) Tough from the outset, you'd be forgiven for thinking this one was hardstyle when it starts. The kick is backed by a rough metallic synth which dies away as other elements are introduced, such as a thicker layer of percussion and bass. The main driving element of this track is the jittery synth line which stabs its way through the entire track featuring a few chord changes to break things up a bit. As the track progresses, a raw and penetrating lead synth takes over for a while before returning to the jittering rhythm of the synth we heard before. Everything about this track is driving and forceful. It might be a little too raw for some but it should generally fuel a good dancefloor.
B: Above The Clouds (Mark Norman Remix) The remix from Mark Norman doesn't focus so much on blasting out sounds like the Original. Instead it tackles things from a more trancey point of view. Everything flows more here and the track has an airy, spaced out feel due to a large amount of reverb. The lead synth used before has been toned down a lot and the stabbing synths have been replaced by long pads. Overall it works very well, making for a much more easily acceptable tech-trancer for those who aren't ready for the harder, fiercer stuff.
Conclusion:
A solid release from The Freak. The Original Mix might just be a bit too intense and raw so the remix by Mark Norman can step in for something just as driving but with more melody and trancey synthiness.
