i:Vibes sits down with the man of the moment aka Pole Folder for an interview about his past and his current album called Zero Gold.
Pole Folder has had a tremendous year and it is only May, he just released his much awaited and much loved album on Bedrock Records called Zero Gold, which was reviewed by i:Vibes Zero Gold Review. He is from Belgium and his real name is Benoit Franquet and his first real claim to fame was when John Digweed who owns Bedrock Records, included Pole Folder and CP's Apollo Vibes on Global Underground 019's Los Angeles' mix album. He has come a long way since then and iVibes.nu caught up with Pole Folder for an interview
i:Vibes: You had mentioned that you were a classically trained musician before, do you think that you would be where you are now without that background or would you still be where you are but it would have been much harder?
A: Well in my case it’s really helpful. Nowadays I’m sure even without a musical background you can do music. But with my musical skills I can go deeper and I can easily translate my ideas into sounds. A musical background is not the main key to be successful with electronic music but for me and my style it’s clearly a strong force.
i:Vibes: How did you come up with the name Pole Folder?
A: It’s composed of the names of two elements used in the sampler: the POLE of the filters and the FOLDER where you put your sounds. At the end it sounds like a real name which was the purpose.
i:Vibes: So you met CP in a record store, what first made you guys want to work together. What do you feel has he done for your career and what do you feel you have you done for his?
A: When I met CP I was a producer but I didn’t have an experience as a DJ, an experience that he has had for a long time. I was trying to work with somebody who could help increase the connection with the dancefloor. Regarding our careers, I’m not sure if we’ve had a direct affect on each other, but the productions have really helped build our names.
i:Vibes: Was it hard making music, your sole career? Do you still work a day job?
A: The only problem when you work alone is to find the energy to go in the studio and to face this loneliness. If at one moment you are down nobody will help you to stand up again. It’s also more difficult sometimes as you have to make all the decisions alone. But it’s not main problems for me. Regarding the day job, music is my full time job
i:Vibes: How did John Digweed hear "Apollo Vibes" and do you think it was that track, that really launched your career more than say your tracks that you did for Sony?
A: John received a CD with 4 tracks @ the Bedrock party in London. He called me back a few days after to sign them all. I have no doubts about the precious help from John and Bedrock to take me to where I am today, more than any of the previous work done with Sony.
i:Vibes: Where do you think you would be, if Bedrock and Digweed had not come along?
A: Well probably in hell. More seriously I’m sure I would still be struggling without them.
i:Vibes: When did you decide to do the album? How long did it take? What were some of the problems that you faced when you did the album?
A: I think the first time I spoke with John and Bedrock was 4 years ago. I spent more or less 18 months in the studio in the production process. Besides the constant brainstorming to achieve what I wanted to create, we had some technical problems. Fro one example, when one of my digital mixing desks crashed. I also lost a DAT master with 3 tracks for a couple weeks.
i:Vibes: What was Digweed's first reaction when he heard the finished album?
A: John sent me a copy signed thanking me for doing a great album. I think he is proud of it which was also a main purpose for me.
i:Vibes: How would you describe the album to someone that has not heard it?
A: Well I think it’s a real electronic progressive album with some rock flavors and an album which respects the listener
i:Vibes: What's next for Pole Folder, do you plan to form a live band and tour? Do you plan to get back into the studio?
A: I’m promoting my album for the moment with Live performances, DJ sets and radio shows. In June I’m back in my studio for some remixes and to work on the next single for Bedrock.
