The Swedish producer/deejay known as Jeff Bennett brings his 8th release on his own label out for the masses, check this one out!
Jeff Bennett – A Valley To Cross (Kung Fu Rec)
The versatile Swedish producer known as Jeff Bennett is about to release his 8th release for his own label called Kung Fu Records. Jeff Bennett has been around the music scene for a few years now and he continues to push his own version of tech house. He continues to produce but also continues to deejay as well. His work has been well received by many of the progressive deejays out today and he continues to grow his own fanbase. His label Kung Fu Rec was started in early 2001 and then in late 2001, after a few releases, the label had to be put on hold, due to legal reasons. We then fastforward three years to 2004 and Jeff Bennett pulled his label out from its hiatus and now he is releasing his tracks, not on 12” as most labels but on mp3 and this is where the scene is headed with less cost involved in putting things out.
Jeff Bennett – A Valley To Cross (Kung Fu Rec 008)
1: A valley to cross (Original mix) 2: A valley to cross (Diego Cid Remix) 3: A valley to cross (Jeff Bennett's Dub mix)
Original Mix
The original starts slow and the riffs catch your attention immediately because they are so well placed. The original seems more progressive house with that slight tech house edge and the mainline has these really funky overtones, throw that together, you get the original mix. Bennett here uses a lot of subtle things, nothing over the top hits you, it is just a well done production and I forsee a bunch of deejays using this as they build the set. This is not certainly peaktime but its perfect for setting the mood or building the set.
Diego Cid Remix
I’m not sure who Diego Cid is but I’d like to find out, if he keeps making things like this. He takes the original and adds more of a tech workout. You instantly realize this from the start, where Cid uses techy noises and then pushes it more into progressive tech house. The remix has a lot more energy than the original but it keeps the subtle funkiness of the original mix. I think this is incredibly beautiful as well, it is nothing over the top or nothing completely weird, just solid progressive house with elements of tech house.
Jeff Bennett’s Dub Mix
Jeff Bennett probably saved the best for last here, the original mix and the dub mix were solid but this is the best of the lot. The dub mix is ironic because most people think of a dub mix as something with less or no vocals compared to the original. Bennett tones down the track at times but he added some steroids into the bassline and it is heavier by a far stretch than the original and the Diego Cid remix. This is tech house, still with that progressive overtone but it uses the melody incredibly here, you have to hear it for yourself and easily makes the package worth the price, just for this.
Conclusion:
Jeff Bennett always seems to deliver with his productions and this is no different. This is tech-progressive house for the genre elites but this is a solid production, perfect for building sets and you have a nice variety here. The tracks were not as techy as I hoped but they certainly are well thought out and certainly worth your time and money
