Larry Kucharz returns once again with his latest album called "Bridge Mix 37", does it match the lofty hights of his Ambient - Red Washes CD?
Larry Kucharz – Bridge Mix 37 (International Audiochrome Inc.)
The secretive Larry Kucharz returns after some recent studio work with his latest album called Bridge Mix 37. Larry Kucharz is a New York based experimental composer/artist who uses a tremendous amount of minimalism in his productions. There are not many who tend to incorporate minimalism into experimental work anymore, so that makes him unique. So his most recent work is Bridge Mix 37 and the review is down below.
Larry Kucharz – Bridge Mix 37 (Intl Audiochrome Inc.)
1.Dream 37 2.Street 37 3.Mood 37 4.Avenue 37 5.Unfunky 37 6.Suite 37 7.Precinct 37 8.Highway 37 9.Location 37 10.Beat 37 11.Route 37
Dream 37 starts this “Bridge Mix 37” album off and it begins very slowly and the trademark drums that Kucharz seems to use so much comes in. It seems more of the same that Kucharz seems to overuse in his compositions; I’m not a big fan, more variety please. It is very difficult to listen to it after you have listened to a few albums and I don’t see anything different. You cannot deny the experimentalism here or the uniqueness of his work but it’s just too much. The melody is the exact same one used in his other CDs and I just don’t see anything different.
Street 37 is a little better with the cool bass effects but the same melody is used again here and this is just too much. The strongest part of this song is the bassline that tries to make up for a mediocre track. The sound effects that are used here do add some variety and the track is decent when the melody that Kucharz has seem to overuse is not there. I do like what he has done with the bass here, it is reminds me of things that shake my speakers, which is always a good thing but the riff that comes in and out needs to be left on the grinder.
Mood 37 is much better than the two previous tracks because it makes use of a beautiful melody coupled with some nice claps. This is all thrown out the window, when an altered organ comes in and out. I’m all for experimentalism but when you take it way too far, then I start to second-guess. To use a catch phrase, its all gone Pete Tong in this disc and it is starting to grate my nerves.
Avenue 37 uses a quick bassline and some unique sounds in the background, which does improve the bad taste that the previous few tracks have left in your mouth. The coolest part of this track is the keys that seem to be used but then it all goes wrong from there; because Kucharz seems to use some really aggravating little melodies that seem to ruin it. As you think all is lost, the bassline seems to pull this track out of the fire and you start to concentrate on that instead of the really annoying effects that you just want to remove from the track
Unfunky 37 starts track five and you hope this CD improves because it has been a long downhill slide and you wonder can the disc survive much more of this without burying itself. Unfunky 37 starts really slow and the almost tapping beat is very nice and when the bassline starts to chug along, you like it but then the same thing happens as the first four tracks, experimentalism gone Pete Tong, it ruins it. I understand that Kucharz is an experimental composer but this is just awful and its hurting me to listen to it. The bassline and the melody are really solid but it seems that every so often Kucharz throws in too much experimentalism and it hurts the disc.
Suite 37 comes next and I’m praying that this CD turns around because Kucharz’s past work has been outstanding at times, especially with his ambient stuff. The bassline is solid and so is the melody. This is just genius here and the song is so emotional, it shows that Kucharz does have the talent, just he chooses to push things in different directions at times.
Precinct 37 starts off almost ambient like but the subtle bassline is just genius and this is relaxing music to the max. I think it is mind blowing how the first five songs really hurt but the last two have been just incredible. As they say at times, it ain’t over till its over and this just hits the spot. I’m not sure if you can classify this track into a genre but whatever it is, I want to hear more of because this is just really nice.
Highway 37 goes back into the quick drumline and it does what the album has suffered from, over experimentalism and it just makes me want to run away and hide for a few days. Some might find the experimentalism refreshing but when you have heard too many CDs from one artist and the effects are similar, you start to really dislike it. The effects die off and a cool piano like effect takes over and pushes this track into some form of decency but not much
Location 37 uses too much experimentalism again, it is like most of the tracks on this disc, you have the solid bassline and everything else is decent but then Kucharz throws in too many different things near the end and it just leaves you with a bad taste. I do give Kucharz some mad props for being unique and not making something that sounds like something else.
Beat 37 continues the same problem with too many effects and now I’m ready to tear my hair out because this is just grating whatever my already shot nerves have left. The best part about this track is the nature sounds that are used at times but this just is too little too late.
Route 37 ends this disc and I think the end can’t come soon enough, this fails with the same problems as the earlier tracks and I don’t think that needs to be discussed again.
Conclusion:
This CD is just awful and I’d personally leave it on the shelf, it is not worth your time or money. Two tracks on here are worth having but the rest is just decent ideas ruined with over experimentalism. I do give Kucharz kudos for at least staying true to himself because in the current music industry today, we know that’s rare. If you want the best of Kucharz, find his Ambient CDs, they are his best, this CD is certainly not.
