The kid, the wizard, the lost Hanson brother? Whatever your name for him, James has been pushing EDM further than many artists out there, and his new EP on Renaissance is a brilliant showcase of his production work on his upcoming album.
EyeAMComputer - A harsh, electro-style track with Zabiela written all over it; chopped vocals, CDJ effects, and all sorts of bits and pieces that just scream out as his trademark style. EyeAMComputer is definately a track that will get you moving, with a bassline driving enough to make you bob your head, and enough punch to lay Mike Tyson out for the count. Not overbearing or fast, this track is a great builder, and suitable for use anywhere in a set.
Robophobia - If the lack track wasn't Electro enough for you, this track will definately slate your thirst for that electro-groove. More of Zabiela's style is present here, with vox that would make some of the early 80's German Techno bands turn green with envy; but at the same time, the production is definately not from the early days of the genre. A fuzzy bassline sets the mood for the track, backed up by the chopped and scratched vocals and a synth line suitable for any occasion requiring a lack of a shirt.
Skanksuary - This track is the closest track on here to resemble more conventional EDM; hard, driving bassline, powerful synth line, and no mucking about with vocals. While not quite as interesting as the other tracks on the EP, this one sacrifices nothing in terms of production quality, danceability, and aural pleasure. It is also the only track that makes use of a 4/4 beat (aside from a breakbeat bit in the middle of the track), making it a bit of a friendlier track for those of you that have just recently started to DJ, but don't want to lose that Breakbeat feel.
Conclusion:
If these tracks are a good representation of the new album, Zabs has me hooked; although not quite the best tracks I've heard all year, definately a promise of good things to come. Overall I'd give this EP an 8.5; I have heard better from Zabiela, but this is definately a great release.
Note: This track was reviewed as a Digital Download, and does not contain the "Sounds & Samples" found on the CD version of this EP.
