Ian Betts returns for his second release on his own label called Six Thirty Recordings. He teams up with London based DJ Ollie Leighs and from that, we are given "Shimmer". Inertia brings up the flipside for this release. Read all about it
IAN BETTS & OLLIE LEIGHS pres AYANA " SHIMMER" (Six Thirty Recordings 002)
Ian Betts seems to be everywhere, playing for Heat UK, who’s big parties seem to wow clubbers from England to Spain and all points around Europe. His last release with Matt Williams was a huge success, which had many top jocks in Europe hammering it to death. Now his label six:thirty recordings is about to unleash the 2nd release, which has him teaming up with London based DJ Ollie Leighs for a track called “Shimmer”. For the people who have already played it (a select few), have noticed that it has gone down well, what will the buying public think of it?.
A1 – Ian Betts and Ollie Leighs presents Ayana – Shimmer (Original Mix) B1 – Ian Betts and Ollie Leighs presents Ayana – Shimmer (Inertia Dark Mix)
Original Mix
The Original Mix starts with a hellish bassline that makes you sense that this will be a stormer, you are only slightly let down when you realize that Betts and Leighs hold back on the reigns at times. I don’t know about the rest of you but I like my trance to be stormers and to just take me by the coattails and drag me along for the ride. The melody then kicks in, using lots of riffs and at some points in the track, it is only melody. The bassline takes a backseat for the rest of the track but the melody is strangely hypnotic for some reason and I like it. Now if you are looking for over the top ASOT style stuff, you won’t find it here, you will find thought that this uses lots of riffs, for those special 3am moments, when you decide to reach your hands for the sky.
Inertia Dark Mix
Inertia pops in with a dark mix, it doesn’t feel that dark to be honest. The bassline is even harsher here and it takes nearly the same route. Inertia uses restraint here as Leighs and Betts did in the original mix. I like how Inertia incorporates the melody differently than the original mix. The riffs are there but in greater quantity and I like this as well. I think the original is better than this mix but this is not too shabby either
Conclusion:
The original is the one to head to, with the Inertia Dark mix holding a nice punch as well. I wished that Leighs and Betts had not used restraint; this could have been an even nastier floor destroyer. I think the riff work might put off some people and they may want more bassline. Not that bad, not that amazing either but still a solid piece of work nevertheless.
