Continuing on with the Skywarp Platinum Hard Trance series that’s rocking the decks in club land! The second vinyl sees label bosses Alphazone back. This time on remix duties to Niklas Gustavsson’s Cloudchaser. Here’s the review…

Cloudchaser- Aerodynamic (Alphazone Remix) 141bpm

Label Bosses Alexander Zwarg and Arne Reichelt are going through a transitional period at the moment. Trying to move their sound on from what you would automatically call ‘The Alphazone Sound’ and here with this remix of CloudChaser’s Aerodynmic this is also ringing true.
From the opening beat, which belongs to a big breaks section, the remix works as a surprise to Alphazone remix fans. Not that it’s a bad thing. The breaks section is wonderfully powerful in it’s own right, blending nicely with a introduced Acid line onto a snare. The song slams (and I mean slams!) into action with a massive sounding bass line which works wonderful with the added effected acid lines and of course now, those ‘Alphazone sound’ drum loops. The FX on the acid line in this build gives the remix a real dance swing but loses nothing in the art of power. It’s a perfect blend for me.

Alphazone introduce some radio styled vocals in their remix much earlier than the B side original, which really gives a nod back to DJ Kim’s Jetlag days. (That awesome remix is one of the best in the biz!!) Breaking the song down to a Kick and bass line before layering the tune with yet more acid sounds and some wonderful sweep effects. Constantly gaining power and energy in the form of percussion, along with a staggered 4 to 5 key sequence which adds to the complexity if not the fluency.
The vocals once again cut in and sound super! The track splits into the break beat again only this time, Alphazone cut out the acid lines and opt for including a pad sequence layered over the top to add a more floaty effect. Soon this is joined by a powerful and slightly strange sounding strings sequence plus a sequenced bass in the back ground. With a fading inward arpeggio of the same sequence. The breaks and lack of that power bass line make this section really work. Sounding both trancey and hard. Again the blend is excellent.

A massive snare and those Radio style vocals lead to the main sequence. A powerful but melodic hook. Which is one of the reasons this sticks out. The main sequence isn’t robotic in anyway or ‘looped’ (a complaint of some of today’s trance efforts in general) sounding with real emotion and speeding on, into a clever idea! Breaking from the norm, Alphazone don’t add a second breakdown, but stick with the break beat and layers combined for the main break and then just blast back into the main sequence again. It makes the song completely frantic and something that will drive the Hard Trance fans to Heaven and back….Cloud chasing on the way me thinks!
The songs ending is the only downer due to some out of place stabbing sequences but this doesn’t detract from an awesome piece of Melodic, hard and uplifting remixing. Plain and simply awesome.
*****

Cloudchaser- Aerodynamic 138bpm

Niklas Gustavsson is Cloudchaser and I don’t think I’d be wrong in saying he must be an Alphazone fan. The sounds of the B side original are very Alphazone like. But this is very much more straight forward in it’s approach than the flip side remix.

The tune starts with a straight forward kick and some lovely percussion noises that sound as though a woodpecker is stuck in your speaker! There’s no messing around in this song with break beats, jumping straight into a meaty, yet smaller bass line than the A’s. But here Gustavsson goes alone with a strange pitch bending effect on the bass which will have you looking at your deck as if it’s broken! (It’s all very Mauro Picotto. Just quicker!)
Then a looped ‘Goa’ sequence is added and the bass and sequence run through some lovely key chances. The looped sequence is very nice also, working well with the key changes and adds a lot of that Hard Trance energy. After some reverse beats and a powerful snare the track does finally switch into a Break beat. Here the hard trance takes hold, again differing from the trancey break of the A side. Here there is no break, just the main sequence that powers it’s way in. A small space of silence and the song is off at 1000 mph! It’s not until after three cycles of the main sequence that the radio vocals are added and a huge , almost ear splitting acid line straight from a Josh Wink studio, curls in and swoops the song off to the second break and eventually the track winds down the way it started. (Pitch bending as it goes)
****

Conclusion:
Overall
The A side from Alphazone is massive. The song is once again a perfect fusion of Trance/Hard Trance and production standards that uses the elements of a very good Hard Trance tune (The B side) and improves on them. Where as Callisto - Ways (Geoffery Whiteman Remix) sounded similar in style. This tracks main sequence is a true power house and gives it a catcher edge, than that version of that tune. Where as the B will appear to Hard Trance fans completely and is a wonderful tune in it’s own right, the A side would be awesome in any set; Hard Trance or Trance regardless.
