The young producer who is also known as LNQ and JPL brings us two brand new tracks under a new guise, being a blend of both the trance and progressive styles. Belgian superlabel Bonzai signed this immediately, so let’s find out what we’re dealing with here!
Joni Ljungqvist was born in 1987 in the south of Sweden, and has been busy with electronic music since he was 12. With his first real signing being a track together with Terje Bakke called ‘Fanatic’, Joni has released succesful vinyls like LNQ – ‘People I Used To Know’ (which features on Tiësto’s ISOS4) and the recently released JPL – ‘A Place Called Home’. Enough rambling, on to the tracks!
A-side: Explanations Laidback beats and a superbly nice use of percussion and a rumbling bassline make the build a real treat. Multiple catchy melodies bring about a gigantic summer-feeling in the track, being powered even more by the chilled out blend of everything that the track holds. Swinging synth rhythms are being thrown up and down by the ever-changing array of basses, together bringing us inside the break without even noticing it. A nifty little melody starts playing behind everything, almost unnoticable but certainly grabbing a lot of attention! The wonderful thing about it is that it just works incredibly well… it’s kind of ‘slow’ but uses a gorgeous combination of notes to create that distinct summery feel we all like so much these days. Going hand in hand with the bassline and beats, it makes this track a very warm and soothing experience, and will definitely work out in a great way as a set-builder. Plain quality. Rating: 8,5/10
B-side: Society This one is harder, darker and has more fury in it than the A-side. While it’s still not that fast, it does create a whole lot of drive by using a funky bassdrum, crafty percussion and some mysterious introductive melodies. A low and blasting bassline slowly wraps itself up in between everything else, guiding you onwards throughout multiple layers of perfectly arranged synths and a 4-note melody that makes you beg for more. Carried on by various FX, it builds out in the breakdown together with another fuzzy melody, that again induces that sunny cocktail-vibe to return! Though it’s a little less straight to the point than the A-side, it still works very well with all the different small rhythms, making the track a very decent flipside. Rating: 7,5/10
Conclusion:
Mr. Ljungqvist is young, but certainly knows how to produce good tracks! ‘Explanations’ incorporates a wonderful vibe with its sublime little melody during the break, while ‘Society’ takes on a somewhat different approach with the different build and the array of well blending melodies. All in all a great release by this Swedish prodigy, let’s hope he’ll continue this way!
