Intuition is a new label set up by Menno de Jong and Paul Moelands in conjunction with Fundamental. The man behind the famous Estuera project takes credit for the first release, so let’s check it out!
Jonas has already released a few singles on the Blackhole label, including tracks like ‘Tales From The South’ under his Estuera guise and ‘Exile / Morning Glow’ using his Propylon alias. With his tracks being hammered by big league DJ’s like Tiësto and Armin van Buuren, it looks like this young Dutchman is definitely becoming a settled producer in the trance scene.
A-side: Castamara It sounds like this track has been made to perfectly suit the summer! A tight build with funky bongo’s, a rapid bassline and a nice amount of drive are the key ingredients during the first portions of the track, combined with some more fast-paced synthwork and a bunch of repeating and track-enhancing melodies. With different rhythms gradually making their way into the track, you will notice that a slightly emotive and positive atmosphere is being created by adding up different layers of strings and well thought out chords. The main melody in the break totally magnifies this because of its simple, yet rather inventive structure. With the catchyness just bursting out of it, a magnificent sunny feel is being created, made up by the original melody and the cool use of all the other elements. This is definitely trance, but different… and I like it! Rating: 8/10
B-side: Silent Waves While this one goes on in the same style as the A-side, it knows how to diversify itself by using a slightly harder-edged percussion and a somewhat darker build. The bassline is a stabbing and constantly changing array of low frequencies this time, keeping a bit of mystery in there during the build. One thing I like about the build-up is the fact that a nice contrast is being created by bringing in a few more or less ‘happy’ melodies, which give the track a completely renewed face compared with the first half of the build. The main riff is being built out more gently than the one in ‘Castamara’, and works just a bit better on your feelings as well I think. It doesn’t have the amount of energy that the flip has though, but the craftyness that is shining out of it certainly compensates that. A worthy second track on this piece of plastic! Rating: 8/10
Conclusion:
Don’t ask me which of these tracks I like better, because I just can’t seem to decide. ‘Castamara’ its strong side is the very summerish vibe and the inventive melody, while ‘Silent Waves’ gets its tastyness from the emotional chords and the cool contrasts. The Intuition crew have brought us a wicked first release, let’s see what they’ll come up with next!
