One of the more popular, homegrown deejays in the USA has released his fifth tech mix and he has included tracks from Johan Gielen, M.I.K.E, Lost Witness, Ferry Corsten, Josh Gabriel among others. Does it work out?
DJ Micro – Tech Mix 5 (System Recordings)
One of the most popular deejays in America is DJ Micro, whether you want to believe that is up to you but what is true is that he has a tremendous following in the States. DJ Micro has been around the game for a long time, over a decade and he has been pushing the trance sounds from Europe on the American masses. He has done four tech mixes already and he released them on Moonshine and they were well received in the American music press.
Tracklist – Tech Mix 5 (System Recordings)
1.Johan Gielen – Flash 2.Second Sun – The Spell (The Deutchmann Remix) 3.Sandler – Chemistry 4.DJ Micro – The World Around Me 5.M.I.K.E – Massive Motion 6.Lost Witness feat. Tiff Lacey – Home (Michael Parsberg Remix) 7.Ferry Corsten and Shelley Harland – Holding On 8.Menno De Jong presents Sayla – Second Thoughts 9.George Hales – Isolation 10.Josh Gabriel – Alive 11.Vadik – Fate 12.Joshua Ryan – Blueness 13.D:Fuse – Everything With You (J Hazen + DJ3 Remix)
DJ Micro’s mix makes use of a lot of big name tracks, they are certainly all there, Johan Gielen (tho you may not consider him a big name anymore), M.I.K.E, Lost Witness, Michael Parsberg, Ferry Corsten, Menno De Jong, Josh Gabriel, Joshua Ryan and D:Fuse. His mix also does contain a lot of popular anthems and I’m not sure how up to date the American scene is with the European scene but these were certainly well hammered tracks. There are also some lesser known producers such as George Hales, based out of the UK and Vadim Zhukov known as Vadik. There are also producers that you have heard much from in a while, like Josh Gabriel on his own, he is heavily working on the Gabriel and Dresden album at the moment and Joshua Ryan, who not many people have heard from in a few years.
DJ Micro uses a lot of peaktime tracks here because this CD was meant to be a representative of his peaktime set, where the deejay plays the slamming tracks or people think that he or she should. I’m not sure how many deejays play these tracks in the last hour of their set but I would bet that some would at least. M.I.K.E’s Massive Motion was used by many A list deejays during the last hour and so was George Hales’ Isolation and so was Holding On by Ferry Corsten.
The trance tracks do seem to work well but the flow is a little disorganized, particularily the pick of Johan Gielen’s Flash track, it doesn't flow well into “The Spell”. The rest of the tracks do seem to flow and the trance addicts should really love this mix CD because it has the big names and the big tunes.
Now the CD itself is not that bad but I feel that DJ Micro is pushing too many big name tracks but you don't really need to hold it against him because this is aimed at the American market and as I said earlier, I don't know how up to date the American market is these days with what’s happening in Europe. I think its less than I think because the internet has made it easy to listen to shows out of Europe and elsewhere. Still I do think that mix CDs should not contain every big name track on earth and should contain a ton of unheard of exclusives and a ton of not hammered to death tracks.
The CD does uses some awful tracks as well that just don’t seem to work either, like Micro’s own, “The World Around Me” uses an awful vocal, The Spell was bad the first time around and the Deutchmann remix does’nt save it, neither does Gielen’s Flash. It does make use of Massive Motion, which I actually do like. George Hales’s Isolation saves this CD from total destruction and its amazing how many people have picked up this UK producer’s track off of Lange’s label. The rest of the tracks are not that great but not that bad either.
Conclusion:
Certainly not my cup of tea but lots of people will find this as a great hands in the air CD and it is aimed at the American market, so it should do well. I just think that a mix CD should not contain every single big track that you can fit on it and I don’t think that this ia great example of a solid CD. DJ Micro did not fail at anytime in picking this because his fans expect this style from him and he’s huge in America. It will certainly gain some attention from trance heads with the big names involved. If you hate big names, then wait for JooF’s latest White Label mix compilation, out soon, if not, get this.
