On the menu today is a plate by our chef mister van Gelderen, filled with bassy techtrancy and a tasty bit of breakbeat to make sure that everyone's hunger will fade away in no-time. Head in to find out what it was like!
This Holland based DJ and producer has been doing the rounds for years now. Releasing trancy tunes like 'Proceed', 'Sustain' and the vocal gem 'Crying Out', he seems to be slowly heading for a different direction by bringing some slighly harder tracks nowadays. Ronald's previous single 'Cold Storage' hit the shops in the last few months of 2004, being a tough as nails floorfilling techtrancer backed with a deep and inventive breakbeaty mix called the '80's Trashy Synth Mix'. The structure of the vinyl that's being reviewed here is a lot alike: side A features the original, while the flip has been reserved for a totally different mix in style.
A-side: Original Mix No soft stuff going on here, 'cause some harsh percussion is what we get to hear when putting the needle on the first few grooves. It is easily noticeable that this is a tune by Ronald because of that distinct kickdrum that we've also heard in 'Cold Storage', backed by some neat percussion and a very, very deep grinding bassline which gets introduced after a somewhat slow build. Taking over control instantly, this array of basses injects a rather large amount of drive into the track, especially because of its very tight feel. Gradually throwing in multiple FX like fast snares (which reminded me of Marco V's remix for Ton TB's 'Dream Machine'), rapid synth notes and more goodies, we get to the break in no time. A dark female voice tells us about her filthy state of mind, but then everything speeds up like a Formula 1 race: some really phat, vigorous and filthy (oh yeah, that's the word I was searching for) melodies are being brought up, combining themselves with one another to create a stabbing & slamming experience during the climatic parts. This is one of them tracks that will cause mania on a floor in a matter of seconds; its huge basses and addictive melodies make it a true corker!
B-side: Broken Beats Cut Up Now this is something totally different. As you might have already noticed, this is a breakbeaty interpretation of the original, though the only elements returning are a few bits of the main melodies, the vocal sample and some other things. Starting off with a teasing build and some really mean broken beats, this really knows how to keep the listener groovin' by constantly adding tight little gimmicks like vocal chants, wicked percussion and some really jammin' synthwork. The way in which the melodies have been incorporated is very cool: they have been speeded up a bit to fit with the rest of the track, then to burst loose using some more low-toned synth chords, thick percussional elements and a rightfully nice drive. A nice addition to this release!
Conclusion:
The Original is a wicked piece of trance with a lot of techy elements, containing some really infectious, floordamaging melodies and a great set of basses. The breakbeats interpretation on side B knows how to get things going as well, concluding in a very decent release once again on the young, but already highly acclaimed High Contrast label.
