The famous Dutch trance duo returns with a brand new 2-track single, consisting of pure trance on side A, while side B offers a mad techtrance track… Have they done it again?
‘Airwave’, ‘Awakening’, their complete ‘Symsonic’ album, numerous remixes for the most respectable artists… you name it, they did it! Loads of their always identifiable trance mixtures became instant classics, and are still being played out these days. Their previous EP with the tracks ‘Beats At Rank-1 Dotcom’ and ‘After Me’ were able to create quite a bit of havoc on the floors, especially because of a total change in style from their previous work. ‘Beats At..’ was a techtrance monster, while ‘After Me’ contained a lot of inventiveness by combining trance melodies with big breakbeats. As said, this new EP is a blend of styles again, so let’s check it out.
A-side: Opus 17 Looking at the title, you might think that this is based on a classical piece. But it isn't, because the whole thing is a totally new creation by the guys themselves. A gigantic orchestral piece commences right at the beginning, playing soothing melodies using strings and numerous different instruments. Subtly being backed up by soft choirs and a fast, highly emotive set of chords (that in some way reminded me of ‘The Orange Theme’ soundwise), the tune kicks off fiercely with a tightass bassdrum and some well placed percussion. A stomping bassline bangs along with the ever-playing melodies, creating a highly uplifting atmosphere thoughout the build. With everything enhancing, morphing, powering and energizing all the time, the breakdown serves as a nice contrast. The classical amazingness returns again, but now accompanied by a very well worked out synth melody. With the riff fitting in perfectly with the rest of the track, the hands-in-the-air moments just burst out of the track! A definite yes when you like yourself some powerful uplifting goodness.
B-side: TopGear No, this wasn’t made in conjunction with Jeremy Clarkson. But the overall brutal style does have something in common with the TV-show! Even right at the start you’ll begin to notice that this is something utterly inventive: odd, almost industrial sounding FX are being powered up by a very techy use of beats and basses, creating a very driving experience throughout the first parts of the track. The fun really starts when this sequence of continuously speeded up FX starts to play: creating a maximum amount of tension, the track spontaneously morphs into a vicious monster full of mind shizzling climaxes, mean synths and big basses. With the originality just dripping off of it, the tune constantly introduces new ways of teasing you. This could be categorized as techtrance, but it’s just so much more than your standard stuff! If you need yourself a tune to make a crowd open their eyes widely, play this.
Conclusion:
Piet and Benno have once again shown that they are as versatile as the weather in Holland. Side A brings us a good portion of uplifting tastyness, while the flipside continues in ‘Beats At..’ style, resulting in a true dancefloor monster. If you like big riffs and/or raw, mean techy tunes, go get this immediately when it comes out.
