Time for some harder stuff! 'Ahead' is a new production by Normen Flaskamp, a producer from Germany. Two hardtrance mixes plus one trance mix are being served on the disc, so let's dig a little deeper into the matter... Head in!
Nostrum & Frank Kuenne's 'Falling' was released just a few months ago on the German Ligaya label, being a vocal trancer with a bunch of classy melodies and a neat vibe. This time around, it seems like mister Flaskamp decided to give things a rougher atmosphere using his Normen Paris guise. Previous releases under his alias are 'Your Life' and 'Fallen Angel', which have both been put out on Reality Bites as well.
A-side: Nostrum Remix No percussion at the beginning here, instead we get treated with a melodramatic, very smooth sounding strings melody during the first part of the tune. While all this sounds very calm and unaggressive at this time, suddenly a rather large contrast is being created by some harsh percussion and a dark, very meaty bassline. This is what I call badass! Developing into a driving monster more and more, subtle eerie melodies are being added to enhance the almost industrial vibe even more. The middle part of the track has the strings part coming in again, again inducing a huge difference to be created again. Slowly evolving to a stronger edition of itself, it suddenly completely disappears and makes part for one of the scary sounding synths and a muted version of the bassline. Eh-oh, time for some banging! The el-hugo percussion and phat bassline return once again, resulting in a very decent, utterly hard floordestroyer. This might not come to its full effect on your stereo boxes, but this will definitely work like a charm when played live!
B1: Original Mix This one has some things in common with side A, but differs a lot as well. The hardish percussion has been integrated once more, but this time it's being driven on by a totally different, rolling bassline, a host of odd sounding FX and some crazy synthwork. A cool industrial saw-like synth is being injected into the tracks build-up using some steady stabs, inducing a rather inventive touch to be included in here. Banging on and on, we eventually get to the breakdown which relies heavily on the portion of strings. The overall sound hasn't changed much, but the neat thing here is the very dark tensionbuilding sample that has been implemented. With the industrial sample from the build returning, you can just hear that there's a big climax following again... No melodies, just the plain techy synths and stomping percussion. Cool!
B2: Teknoon Remix Teknoon is one of Florian Schmidle's aliases. I've recently reviewed his track 'Feelings', but unfortunately I wasn't too excited about that one. This remix is a lot nicer: though it's nothing spectacularly inventive, it does know how to make a wicked trance version out of the original's main melodies. The warm sounding build-up is being led onwards by a subtle use of percussion, a steadily stabbing bassline and some innovative synth chords. The full strings melody is (of course) included as well, but this time a full-on uplifting, stabby melody has been implemented to make this a purely elevating trance mix. One thing that did bother me is the fact that the climax comes in way too suddenly somehow, I think it could have used a better build. It's more like an anticlimax now! The structure of the second part of the tune is rather odd, to say the least. Anyway, Florian does show that he is able to make a decent trance version out of a very harsh original tune. Not bad at all!
Conclusion:
If you like hardtrance, definitely check this out. Although the two hard mixes do not contain that much melodic parts, they're still very wicked because of the huge percussional elements and bassline. Teknoon's remix is nice 'n trancy, but nothing too amazing. All in all a neat release!
