The world famous project from Germany is back on track with a new album, which also features the single that's being reviewed here. Three remixes are being served on our plates here, including interpretations from Rank 1, Alex M.O.R.P.H. and Funaki... Read on!
Andre Tanneberger (aka ATB) has become one of Germany's best known dance projects. Numerous hits like '9PM', 'Don't Stop', 'Killer' or the more recent 'Marrakech' and 'Believe In Me' have all created buzzes around the worlds more commercial charts, but also always included some very decent remixes to complete the package. The original version of 'Humanity' can be found on the new '7 Years' album, which has most of ATB's biggest hits from the last few years on it. It's a neat breakbeaty track, with catchy vocals and some badass basses & rhythms. The first vinyl disc included the Original Club, Energy and Album Finished mixes. Let's find out what the remixes are like!
A-side: Rank 1 Remix After a small period of silence, Rank 1 is back in full force. A new EP is coming up, their remix for 'Lyteo' is doing fantastic, and now there's a sparkling new remix for 'Humanity'. Retaining a very techy atmosphere in the build, Piet and Benno have taken parts of the Original, edited them a bit and then used them during the first portions of the track. Sharp beats, very mean bass notes and a vocal snippet every now and then are the key ingredients during the first few minutes, constantly bringing in almost industrial sounding synths and some neat percussion. Adding small samples of the vocals on and on during a mini-break, the track blasts on and on using this repeating synthie backed by some very subtle melody notes that fit with the vocals quite well. Though this remix doesn't have any really identifiable climaxes, it works out rather nicely anyways because of its unique structure and dark & driving vibe. Not as good as their 'Lyteo' remix, but definitely good food for the dancefloor! Rating: 7,5/10
B1: Funaki Remix On to the second remix. Funaki is actually one of Woody van Eyden's monikers. Though earlier remixes under this guise could be categorized under 'uplifting trance', this is something a little different. The first minute gradually takes you on a journey using a fierce kick and some very funky effects, but the real fun starts when the -amazing- bassline enters in! It's immensely funky, driving and energetic, and creates an unmistakable drive throughout the build. It works perfectly 'on its own' as well: this remix contains tiny mini-breaks, which are being used to introduce parts of the beautiful vocals. Bouncing on and on with just the bassline and kick, more and more energy is being injected just until the rather emotive vocal chorus enters in. Slowly adapting itself to settle in with the climax, a repeating darkish synth sets foot in the body of the break. I can't help but see a resemblance with one of Tiesto's tracks from last year now: the synth is a lot alike, but all that fades away a bit when that monstruous bassline hits in again. This will certainly cause havoc on the floors! Rating: 8/10
B2: Alex M.O.R.P.H. Remix Mr. M.O.R.P.H. just can't sit still these days it seems. New remixes are being churned out very often, but all of them have been able to retain the quality we're used to from him. Alex is the first one of the remixers who takes a step away from the techy gimmicks, and use a pure hands in the air approach. His trademark sounds are here again, this time adjusted with just a tiny bit of dark FX. The bassline is rather deep, and serves as a great builder together with the rapid percussion rhythms. Shiny melodies start to take part of the track as well, playing together with the vocals in a calm and relaxing way. It's nice to see that, after the vocal chorus, this synth gets built out into a true M.O.R.P.H. styled energy beast, ready to rock your socks off! Keeping the uplifting drive, it blasts fiercely during the climax using the tight percussion and phat bassline. A superworthy remix! Rating: 8/10
Conclusion:
We have ourselves a nice variety of remixes here. Rank 1's mix has that unmistakable techy atmosphere we hear from them these days, the Funaki mix has one of the best basslines I heard this year, and Alex's interpretation doesn't disappoint either by bringing us a superenergetic trancer. If you like various styles of trance with a nice vocal coating, go get this!
