Dutch DJ and producer Mr. Sam returns with a brand new single, this time with a remix by Rank 1 included on the vinyl. This seems to be on everyone's playlist, so let's dig a lil' deeper into the matter!
The now 30 years old Mr. Sam has been doing the rounds in the scene for quite some time now. Releasing music since '99, he has made tunes like 'Pressurize' and 'Surrender', as well as numerous tracks together with the likes of Tim Coltrane, Fred Baker and of course his participation in the Mojado project.
On to the vinyl!
A-side: Original Mix The original interpretation of this track is a very laidback trancer, filled with inventive FX and bringing about an almost housey vibe. Subtle gimmicks, an agile use of percussion and a bouncy bassline lead you through the first portions, backed by vocal snippets by none less than Kirsty Hawkshaw, the vocalist who has also done the vox on a few of Tiësto's hits. The overall structure and sound is something quite outstanding: it doesn't have an everyday build, but constantly goes down and comes up again using multiple cool tricks. The breakdown seems very simple at first sight with just one tiny synthie playing this not too complicated, yet effective melody. All this gets built out a bit, just until the bouncy percussion hits in again to create an overall relaxing and peaceful trancer. Give this a try, it's neat! Rating: 7,5/10
B-side: Rank 1 Remix And now for the mix that the whole world seems to be caning. Most of you might know that a lot of Rank 1's contemporary productions are leaning a bit more to the techy side, and so does this one. A somewhat dark and moody vibe is being created right at the beginning of the track, with a deep bassline grinding right over some hefty percussion. The vocal snips are here as well, but have been edited in a very cool way to fit the vibe that is being brought forward. Suddenly, just one synth starts playing on top of everything, taking over control immediately. This is where the big fun starts: that one sound just starts enhancing itself more and more, becoming a full techy melody at its highest point. With the infectiousness just shining off of it, this becomes a true banger when that badass bassline hits in again! This is more than perfect for a hungry dancefloor: though the melody has been kept rather uncomplicated, it works out superbly combined with all the other elements. No wonder why everyone's playing this! Rating: 8,5/10
Conclusion:
Mr. Sam has definitely created something nice again! While not many people seem to play the original, it still is a cool relaxing trancer with some inventive stuff in there. Rank 1's remix is an unstoppable beast full of addictive basses and an industrial sounding, yet utterly banging melody. A great release on the beloved Black Hole label once again!
