New York's best kept secret of a party finally decides to release a compilation based on three plus years of mayhem in the East Village.
Shameless Productions Presents Le Souk Sunday Sessions – Mixed By Swamy and Astro & Glyde (E03 Records) Everyone seems to know Twilo as one of New York’s greatest parties but since it closed down, most people seem to not realize that one of New York’s best parties happens not on Friday or Saturday but Sunday. It all happens at Le Souk, an African restaurant tucked in the East Village, which plays host to a weekly party that most say is the place to check out, when in New York. Le Souk was started by two brothers, who wanted to bring some authentic North African cuisine to the East Village.
So you already have the venue, Le Souk in the East Village, now here is the other part of the story, add Swamy, who started Shameless Productions in 2001 and he has a history of transforming certain non club venues into underground parties. He deejays as well and now add the residents Astro & Glyde, who have released records on Bedrock Records and you now have complete lineup. Well I’m sure you are thinking, the man forgot the patrons, well for the purposes of this review, we will leave them out.
Every Sunday Night, you have Swamy and Astro & Glyde at the decks for a fourteen hour ride of mayhem. While everyone is winding down their weekend, the party is just getting started in the East Village. They decided to release a compilation based on the flavor of their sets at this party, that continues to go strong, which has been running for over three years.

Disc One represents most likely the warmup sets and the second disc represents the peaktime sets. Disc One starts with some slow burning NYC house, injected with elements of Funk and it continues from track 1 through to the end. The first part of the disc is some funky house with that NYC element injected into it and near the end of the first disc, it feels like it pushes the more European house sound with the Trentemoller remix as an example. Disc One is a gentle glide and is very easy to listen to and you get the feel of the party, which is why this CD was created. There is also a ton of undiscovered gems here, at least for my ears. A very nice way to start a compilation
Disc Two takes the more uptempo approach, which is probably the peaktime set, since the parties are usually at least twelve hours. It is still house but you have more drive with each and every passing song, which is a different from the funk fueled journey of disc one. You also seem to notice how well this flows together and who knew a NYC party could push such different sounds on a compilation. The meat of the CD is basically from track 5 with Astro & Glyde’s own “Dunt Dunt Dunt” to the end of the CD with the often underated Creamer and K mix of Till There Was You. With each song, the CD never loses its sense of drive but always keeps its sense of melody. A very solid disc
Conclusion:
House Lovers rejoice, this disc is for you, for those who really loved Global Underground 027, this is in the same mold, not as chilled as Mr.Howells but they certainly give you a slice of the famous Le Souk Party. If you are in New York, be sure to check this party out, certainly a solid representation on two discs.
