One of the best breakbeat labels in the UK release a compilation of the recent tracks that they love and its all mixed by Soul of Man
Fingerlickin Records presents We Love It
The two guys behind Soul of Man aka Jem Panufnik, Justin Rushmore started Fingerlickin and they have flourished like TCR for years but they seem to not get their fair share of press and props. Their biggest release of late was the Plump DJs latest album called “Saturday Night Lotion”, which you must get, it rocks the cash bah. They are home to Slyde, Drumattic Twins, Lee Coombs and a few others. Anyway, Fingerlickin decided to put together a compilation of the best songs of late and all mixed by Soul of Man.
1.Slyde – We Love It 2.Drummatic Twins – Sticky 3.Soul Of Man – Get It Girls 4.Drummatic Twins – Rocksteady 5.Plump DJs – Creepshow (Soul of Man remix) 6.Plump DJs – Soul Vibrates 7.Lee Coombs and Dylan Rhymes – Alright All Night 8.Soul Of Man – Kickback 9.Lee Coombs & Meat Katie – The Hum 10.Soul of Man – Shake EM Down (Dylan Rhymes Mix) 11.Plump DJs – Bullet Train 12.Lee Coombs and Andy Gardner – Obsessional Rhythm (Atomic Hooligan Remix)
The disc begins with Slyde’s “We Love It”, is basically the short induction. It is energetic and it gets you into the mood for what Fingerlickin have to offer. I’ve long stated that Fingerlickin is the Aphrodite and Mickey Finn of the Breaks world with lots of energy and lots of fun. The Drummatic Twins, who are one of the most underrated duos in electronic music today, continue the breakbeat onslaught and “Sticky” is so addictive with that bassline.
Soul of Man, who own Fingerlickin and who mixed this CD, come in with “Get It Girls” with bleepy noises and some underlying funk, that just gets me moving. I’ve always enjoyed how Soul of Man seem to know what works and they seem to have their finger on the dance floors like say Rennie Pilgrem seems to. The Drummatic Twins appear in track number four with a sample about “Rocksteady”, something about it just doesn’t catch my taste; it is certainly a nice song but just a little weird
The mighty Plump DJs appear here with the Soul of Man remix of Creepshow. It’s more of a darker take on one of the better Plump tunes. Soul of Man use a lot of effects and they seem to let the energy of the track guide it. We have now gone five tracks in and this is quite a compilation because it not only showcases some of the better breakbeat acts but its also quite addictive. My favorite Plump DJs tune of late was Soul Vibrates, where they pound a vocal over this mean breakbeat bassline. It appears here with the typical Plumpesque funky edge. I’m getting my copy of their latest CD out after this; the CD makes you want to bust out your Plump DJs stuff.
Lee Coombs makes his first appearance here with Dylan Rhymes, in the track entitled “Alright All Night”, which uses an addictive pulsating riff coupled over a harsh bassline, which just makes you want to bob your head up and down and let the music overtake you. As this track gets going, the line takes over and just addicts you so badly that it hurts (but that’s a good thing). Soul of Man return with Kickback, which uses their trademark, which I’ve know realized, which is cut up vocals or samples over filthy basslines that contain loads of energy.
Lee Coombs and Meat Katie come in at track nine, when the compilation starts to take us from the middle of the compilation to the end with force. I love this track, which an addictive bassline and this strangely hypnotic noise that just draws you in. Meat Katie’s input on this track is evident because he usually goes dark with a hint of funk. Soul of Man’s Shake EM down comes in at track ten and this has been a solid breakbeat CD so far. This smashes you with melody and this dark and filthy vocal that goes “Deep Inside”.
The Plump DJs make their last appearance on the CD with the ever-energetic “Bullet Train”, which is another number off their latest CD, which is a must for any breaks fan. I love how the Plumps never seem to lose their energy with their tracks. The last track on this CD is half of the Plumps aka Andy Gardner and Lee Coombs; Atomic Hooligan remixed the track. This ends it off perfectly with some nasty dark riffs, which try to cut your throat, which is just perfect.
Conclusion:
Nasty, Filthy and just downright fun from the Boys and Gals from Fingerlickin. It showcases what one of the other breakbeat labels in the UK has to offer and they got a heck of a lineup and they got the Plumps, which is usually an unfair advantage. Get this.
