One of Holland's most renown tech-trance hotshots steps up to bring us yet another piece of banging, raw music. His previous single 'Cherry Blossom' did very well, so let's find out what damage this one can do.
Having released his previous EP consisting of the tunes 'Cherry Blossom' and 'Beautiful Mind' just a few months ago, mister Woods now reveals another one of his new productions. 'Advanced' has been doing the rounds in his own sets for about a year now, and is being caned to infinity by Tiësto, Marco V and a whole bunch of other well respected DJ's.
A-side: Original From the first seconds on, you'll notice that this going to be a rough and harsh track, relying heavily on the very recognizable percussion and an utterly deep, floormoving bassline that comes in after a minute or so. Stomping onwards using a set of neat effects, stabbing beepy synthwork and an array of female vocal lines that kind of sound like they were taking from a movie somehow, the track repeatedly uses short mini-breaks to show off the amount of drive that has been created so far. The main breakdown firstly consists of an industrial, grinding synth, but then at all of a sudden the main melody hits in. It's an oldschool, bell sounding riff playing this immensely catchy rhythm, and it totally catches you off-guard! It has a rather anthemic feel to it because of the superbly high recognition factor it features. No wonder why this has been doing so well lately! The badass bassline and percs do their work like they should, with the riff changing every now and then to keep a good amount of variation in there. A peaktime tune which will definitely get them feet moving! Rating: 8/10
B-side: Ton T.B. Remix Having released his 'Static Bullet / The Word' EP a while ago on Black Hole, this artist now takes care of the remix on the flip of this disc. Already incorporating tiny bits of the main melody its sound in the very first moments of the break, it is noticeable that the structure of this one is going to differ somewhat from the original. The overall atmosphere is more quiet, using a bubbling bassline backed by some standard percussional elements. The vocals take a more prominent step forward and sound just a bit more raw, constantly serving as a prelude for kick-ins of both the b-line and beats. The biggest difference with the A-side comes forward in the break. With the hints to the oldschool riff still doing their thing at the background, this sweeping and dark sounding lead synth starts playing on top of it, generating a totally different feel. I guess this could work out, but overall it sounds kind of simple, it loses the anthemic feel that was created in the original. Overall an okay remix, but nothing too special. Rating: 7/10
Conclusion:
Marcel Woods once again shows that he still is one of the leading producers of techy, inventive trance out there. Combining big basslines, a wicked percussion and that very original riff in his original mix, he has made another corker of a peaktime tune. Ton T.B.'s remix is quite OK as well, but can't really compete with the flip. Rumours say that Marco V and Marcel himself are already playing the follow-up, so definitely keep an eye on their sets!
