Chilled, Jazzy, Downtempo and just downright beautiful, do you need more of this type of music, read on if you do!

James Hardway Collective – Over Easy (Lunatic Works)

The much hyped and worthy of attention record label out of California known as Lunatic Works keeps releasing unique projects from unique artists. Howie B’s band Mayo released their CD earlier this year on Lunatic Works. Anyway before us, sits James Hardway aka David Harrow and his collective group of like minded musicians. His alter ego is James Hardway but he has been around music since the early days of Acid House in England (he’s British) and he has been making music since the early 90’s, on Andrew Weatherall’s label called Sabres under the alias of Technova and his two brilliant albums called “Tantric Steps” and “Transcience”. He has toured the world in many aspects and done a lot of work with many artists but he’s always pushed boundaries and always taken his music seriously. So here is album three for an unrecognized genius and his collective of likeminded individuals.

James Hardway Collective – Over Easy

1) The Life
2) The Hard Way
3) Watch the Moment
4) Greed
5) Everything and Anything
6) Keep The Flow
7) Pressure
8) Communications

The album starts by slapping you senseless with the chilled music stick and the jazzed fueled bassline just makes you want to find a beach, some alcohol and a CD player to watch the sun set to. I love how the jazz is not forced on you, its just chilled music by some collective minds. “The Hardway” is a delicious rap over an almost drum’n’bass tempo bassline, the rap has a goal and its not the “bling bling” stuff. The chilled goal of this album just makes you happy as heck and its really good and we are only two tracks in.

“Watch The Moment” is a Brazilian influenced track that takes you into that jazzy style of mood. The beautiful vocals just add to this track and its really relaxing, just what the average stressed out worker (aka me) needs these days. “Greed” follows the same format, go chilled, add a beautiful vocal and some instruments, in this case a trumpet and saxophone, stir and then pour. I love how it pushes the jazz, without trying to hit you over the head with a hammer or bat. Nothing is forced, it is almost like a buffet here where you have your choice to pick it or to leave it and that’s the way that music should be.

“Everything and Anything” takes you into that Gilles Peterson style of tracks and it still has that relaxing feel but they are making music, not just background music for the beach and that’s what is different from Hardway’s Collective compared to most other artists. The vocal just allows the music to hit another peak for some reason but it is just done very well. “Keep the Flow” continues the chilled jazz/vocal driven stuff that they call this album and it seems that the title so well fits this CD, the music is definitely “Over Easy”.
“Pressure” uses some instruments to gain that really chilled feel and then the vocal comes in, almost on cue and then it instantly takes you into a really chilled feel. I love this album, it is a tad short but it is definitely well made music from a smaller label that you need to check out. “Communications” ends this album in an even more chilled direction than the first seven tracks, it goes into a downtempo jazz fest and its just so beautiful.

Conclusion:
Harrow’s years of madness, traveling, experimenting and just taking it all in and learning have served him incredibly well. This album is just so well done and its jazz fueled chillout/downtempo at times at its peak, really music to relax to. Check this one out, its certainly worth your time and effort.
