Dutch superclub The Matrixx hosted the first party in a series of upcoming events taking place because of the launch of mister V's highly anticipated second artist album. Of course we were there as well, so head in to read the full report!
After nearly three years, it's time for Marco V to release a brand new artist album. Hitting the shops on September 30, it looks like this CD+DVD is going to be one of the highlight albums this year because of its huge fanbase and a set of blasting new tracks on it. To celebrate the release, Marco has initiated a World Tour consisting of parties in countries like the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Brazil, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Greece and Spain. The very first edition was held in the Dutch city of Nijmegen, in the famous Matrixx club. Time for the report!
Party: Marco V 200V World Tour Kick Off Venue: The Matrixx, Nijmegen, The Netherlands Date: September 17th, 2005 Doors open: 22:00 - 05:00 Line-up: 22:00 - 00:00: Jordy Lishious, 00:00 - 05:00: Marco V
My party mate and me entered the club at around 23:00, leaving us enough time to catch a full hour of the warmup DJ as well. While it wasn't too crowded at the door, we noticed that the amount of people inside was definitely not bad considering it wasn't too late yet. Let me first tell you a bit about the club's interior. The moment I entered the main hall, a few of the first things that immediately caught my attention were the large lamp-things hanging across the ceiling. The cool thing was that they were able to switch colors, creating a very special effect. See the pictures below: the first one has Jordy Lishious spinning in the DJ booth on it, the second one shows the back side of the club with the balcony at the right.
The dancefloor area had two bars on each side, both stretching out far enough to keep drink delivery times at an acceptable level. A small stage was located at the back of the dancefloor as well, which was rather nice if you wanted to have a neat view from a somewhat higher view. Our wristbands even enabled us to get onto the balcony, from where we had a great overview of the whole club. As said, Jordy Lishious was still pumping out his groovy beats serving as a very nice warmup to what was to come. He played a lot of great energetic house tunes, causing a lot of people on the floor to start bouncing already at this time of the night. The lighting wasn't in full effect yet, but the overall effect looked wicked already anyway. The DJ booth and its surroundings were something special. Screens for visuals were located at the left, right and behind the DJ, as well as a bunch of huge strobes and other lighting. Four flamethrowing devices and two huge smoke machines were there as well, all enhancing the special vibe that was there even more. There were also two small stages for the acts to perform on, which I'll tell you a bit more about later on in this report.
At around twelve o'clock, it was time for our main man Marco V to take over the decks and start spinning his unique 5 hour set. We thought he'd build up with some slow tunes, but we were totally wrong! A lush intro started flowing through the speakers, only to be followed by a huge array of totally blasting square basses and beats. This amazing floordestroying corker of a track was 'Red Blue Purple', one of the tracks featured on the new album. Everyone went crazy already, not knowing what was to come next. One sidenote must be made about the visuals: they were great! A moving version of the albums artwork, spinning V logo's, it was all there. Banging on by throwing in some cool techno-ish tunes, we eventually got to the moment where 'Second Bite', his latest single, started playing. Just as in the clip for 'More Than A Life Away', the lyrics were appearing on the visual screens in a perfect timing, which was of great effect. This was done in most of the vocal tracks he played, including 'Bang Bang', 'Sweet Dreams' and 'Tainted Love'. Cool! The great Fuzzy Hair Remix of Reflekt's 'Need To Feel Loved' definitely knew how to get things going during the first hour, enabling Marco to slightly build to somewhat harder tunes by Fred Baker, Randy Katana, Rank 1 and Marcel Woods. At a certain point, the lasers started to burst out their beams. Knowing that Marco is a fan of a nice array of these, we were treated with some true eyecandies. Three large ones were located above the DJ Booth, covering just about the whole club with their multicoloured beams. 'False Light', the opener of the new album, a superb tune with some cool male vocals, a very catchy lead synth and some badass basses, was played soon enough. The flamethrowers created a fantastic effect combined with the wind / smoke machines!Check out the vid here (rightclick -> save as).
As you can see on the above picture, two of the screens were sometimes used to perform acts on and with. The entertainment started off with two dudes jamming on some bongo's to energize the techno during the beginning of Marco's set, which sounded rather cool. Later on, multiple wicked acts started to appear, namely three acrobatic guys doing crazy moves, 'shadowdancers' behind the screens and a guy with two fire-ropes, who was very fast by the way. Very nice to look at! Of course, Marco was still rocking the crowd's socks off by throwing in bomb after bomb. His own 'Calling the Shots' is one of them tracks that instantly sets a dancefloor on fire: its percussive structure and basses have been put together in such a way that you just cannot stand still, believe me! Here's a short clip.
Just as I thought the visuals couldn't get any better, more and more neat moving objects started to appear on them. For instance, two tracks with Kill Bill samples had genuine movie footage coming with them, and during a few of Marco's tracks the videoclips were being played to deliver the crowd the maximum experience.
Prior to the party, I was told that the last hour would be something special. And it was! Benjamin Bates (Marco's co-producer and friend) entered the booth, gearing up for a special B2B set. Starting off with Bates' latest smasher 'The Manimal' (click!), this was set to be a superb last 60 minutes of this great party. They started playing more and more classic tracks like 'Indicator (200V Remix)' (click again, sorry for leaving out the climax; my legs just couldn't resist) the 'Clocks' and 'Tainted Love' remixes and loads more.
Suddenly, the music stopped and the MC started shouting his thank you words and all that. Luckily, there were two more tracks played after this, probably the two most devastating tracks from his new album: 'Calling The Shots' and 'Red Blue Purple' (vid!). Everyone went nuts one more time, finishing off this first World Tour party in a great, great way.
We know Marco likes to throw good parties, but this time he, the Matrixx and the rest of the organisation have outdone themselves. The venue itself is great, the entertainment was amazing, the music totally rocked my socks off and the crowd was gentle, yet very driven. Definitely one of the better parties I've visited this year. Go Marco!
'200V' will be in stores soon, as well as a 3x12" vinyl sampler containing extended versions of all the new album tracks. Don't miss it!
