Katakana makes his Segment Records debut with "Liquid assets". The package features a mix from Katakana and a remix from Micah.
Katakana owns and runs Sonambulist Recordings, which has been host to a string of his releases; as has In Music and more recently Chris Stereo's Isle of Man based outfit, Souce of Gravity. Micah, full name Micah Lukasewich, has previously released material on Silver Planet and Method. Micah's remix of "As You Fall" by Bent, also made its way onto the recent Chris Fortier "Balance 007" compilation.
1) Liquid Assets (Katakanas fluid dynamics mix)
The track starts with a simple break beat pattern, which quickly takes a sharp, but well designed, direction change when the kick starts. From there the track builds nicely with extra percussion and distractions, until the bass drops (two minutes in) and hits you like a wall of sound! It's one of those basslines that literally fills the room and may result in casualties. The track builds depth with various pulsating synths and haunting pads. It's the structure that stands out though. As the name suggests, the track builds in such a discrete way that, when it reaches its peak (at around 5 minutes), you don't really realise. Clever stuff! Overall the track has a crisp, clean well defined sound and, because of the way the track builds, it could be applied to pretty much any situation.
2) Liquid assets (Micah remix)
The Micah remix has more pace, but still retains the melodic fluidity of the previous mix. The drive is enhanced with an almost Donna Summer esq bass (which is no bad thing) and acid like, "squelchy" (if that's a word), synths. Again, the structuring is top notch and cannot be faulted. The Micah remix should not be overlooked, it compliments Katakana mix perfectly, however it also shines in it's own right. Excellent club and compilation material.
Conclusion:
Both tracks are superbly produced. With labels such as Segment continuing to champion this sound, there will always be a place for it, especially if the tracks continue to be of such a high standard. If you like Katakanas previous releases, you'll love this one.
