The first release on Ferry Corsten's new label is here! Being on the playlist of many A-list DJ's, this vinyl features two inventive mixes by Benny Benassi and mister Corsten himself. Head on in to find out what they're like!
Ferry has been playing his own mix of this track for quite a while now. He also included it on his two most recent compilation CD's, namely Passport: Kingdom of the Netherlands and Creamfields. Time for an in-depth analysis!
A-side: Benny Benassi Remix This Italian DJ and producer needs no introduction I guess. He kind of created an odd, very distinct own style in productions like 'Satisfaction', but this remix does things in a totally different way. It does retain the same speed, but the overall structure differs a lot! The build is all about pulsating basses, an almost happy sounding beepy melody and a fierce kickdrum. The vocals by Edun are being brought in gradually, and they're really something special! Not being your usual cookie cutter melodramatic stuff, they somehow create a very neat and lovely atmosphere. Sometimes she's just talking a bit, then to raise her voice and bring in some cool sounding lyrics. The creativity that has been put in the vox comes forward again during the breakdown: here, it's all about Edun asking herself who's behind some sort of door, with the vocalist constantly adding a bit of extra emotion by speeding up her lines and all. Looking at the overall production of this mix, I think it's a bit too 'dull'. The percussion is OK, but there's just not enough happening in there, and I think it could have used a higher BPM as well. All hail to the vox though! Rating: 6,5/10
B-side: Ferry Corsten Remix Now for the mix a lot of you might have heard already. Ferry takes on things in his usual way, with that distinct drumkit he's been using for a while now. It still sounds fresh though, mainly because of the fact that he constantly knows how to keep the diversification in there. The pace in this one is a lot higher than in the Benassi mix, which is definitely a good thing. This one too builds on the beepy melody, but that's where the reminiscence with the flip stops. Ferry has incorporated a constantly changing, deep and electro-ish bassline, adding an extra dimension to the wicked vocals. The build leans a lot on Edun's voice, but it doesn't get annoying at all because of the amazing amount of variety it's able to bring about. It all sounds very soothing and coasy, very well done. Driven on by an elevating tiny melody, we get to the relaxing part of the track which again has the mysterious vocals doing their work. In contrast to Benassi's mix, this one has a full (yet simple) melody in there, blending with Ferry's clear percussion effortlessly. This one's definitely going to be played a lot during the coming months! Rating: 8,5/10
Conclusion:
Flashover's first release knows how to get things going, especially Ferry's mix. It uses the vocals to great effect, resulting in another great production by one of the pioneers of today's trance. Benny Benassi's interpretation just misses an X-factor, but does do well when looking at percussion and the wobbling bassline. Go pick this up when you want something original and different!
