For Surface Recordings' 4th release, established producers Andy 'Pulser' Perring and Tim Stark, from Rapid-Eye fame, collaborate together for the first time in 6 years under their new Haylon alias. The results? 'Starfighter'. Read on...
:: Haylon - Starfighter :: Surface Recordings :: SURFACE004
1) Starfighter (Original Mix) 'Starfighter' gets right in there with a tight and almost menacing bassline which has a great driving strength behind it. The other element which grabs attention from the outset is a thick layer of trancey synth which pulsates on the off-beat adding another level to the driving yet trancey sound you're hearing. One calm and soothing break later, the pulsing synth is developed into a rhythmic chord progression which really sets the tone and feeling of the rest of the track. Its a smooth and flowing kind of feeling - nothing's driving you too hard nor too fast, you're just gliding on a platform of synth. More synth layers come into play too - most notably a high set of pulsing stringed notes which soar over the rest of the track providing just the right amount of uplifting, euphoric energy that's needed. This is a great combination of heavy, driving bass countered by some sweet synthwork creating something which overall is quite subtle but truly enthralling. This is the kind of track that sucks you in and before you know it, its being mixed out. Great effort!
2) Starfighter (Jonas Steur Remix) If theres anyone who you want to be doing remix work at the moment, its Jonas Steur. After causing quite a stir with his double release of 'Castamara' and 'Silent Waves' it seems he's unleashing his melodic gift onto 'Starfighter' too. Steur employs a sound with more percussion and an active bassline which bubbles away in the background. There is a really nice brushing of spacey ambience and when it comes in, the lead synth has a fine sound which is echoed beautifully and backed up perfectly by the lushest of pads and by the soaring stringed synths we heard in the Original Mix. Aside from this medley of new sounds that Jonas has implemented, he also brings a new melody to the track. It's one of those simple melodies made brilliant by excellent execution ('Silent Waves', anyone?). Add this to the fabulously trancey and enveloping chord changes (especially at the end of the breakdown!) and you're up there somewhere lost in the clouds. Its amazing how all the elements of the Original Mix and a whole host of new ones have been blended together into 8 minutes of beauty. A fantastic remix of a great track. Jonas Steur is one to watch.
Conclusion:
Only up to it's 4th release and Surface are showing what they're made of without holding back. Whether you're after the smooth enrapture of the original or the euphoric melody of the remix, you (and/or your crowd!) are in for a good time. Surface have their work cut out to top this one, do yourself a favour and grab a copy on its release on the 3rd October!
