Randy Katana kicks off the relaunched Jinx Records in a big way with 'Play It Loud'. It has received the thumbs up across the board from the big names - Tiesto, PvD, Above & Beyond, Marco V and Ferry Corsten - plus Armin has tipped it as one of 2005's biggest tunes...
:: Randy Katana - Play It Loud :: Jinx Records :: JINX001
A: Play It Louder Katana sticks to his usual tribal style here. Although for both tracks on this record, the tribal style is more prominent than ever. Beginning percussively, you're shown that this track is all about the build ups, as thats exactly what it does before a lot of the percussion takes a back seat and the thick and heavy kick drum booms through the track. The bassline that kicks in is just as meaty, and what you have is something quite minimal but that is really chugging along with solid intent and determination. Synthwise, the key feature of the track is a stabbed rhythm coming from a really stark sounding synth, almost siren-esque. Because of that, it has a very carnival like atmosphere to it. The second most (and yes I started with second intentionally!) notable feature in this production is the mammoth breakdown. Its huge. Katana has crafted a super-long buildup in the way only he knows how, mounting the tension and anticipation up and up. The most notable thing about the track is what happens next - everything but the heavy kick is lost and the hook from the remixed New Order - Confusion ('that' scene from Blade, and for all those people - and there are a lot - who thinks this is a rip off of Public Domain or something else, it just plain isn't) pumps out loudly. The first time I heard it, it took me completely by surprise, and it worked in a good way for me. A lot of people like it, but a lot of people are opposed to it too. However, this has received the singing praises from the top jocks, and they represent all those people out there who've been stomping to this tune for the last few months, so it definitely seems to work out there in clubland. A very brave move for Randy Katana and a bold first release for the all-new Jinx Records.
AA: Play It Loud On the flip we find 'Play It Loud'. It carries a slightly tweaked sound to its counterpart. The kick has more attack, it has a punchier sound. The stabbing synth is more defined and has a distinct echoing ring to it, making it sound as if its bouncing around inside the walls of a huge arena. This would sound awesome at a massive festival for sure. The breakdown is similar in style, but not nearly as long. When the track drops back in, there are no surprises. This time, layers of high pitched synth and rolling bass are added to the background, raising the track and holding it at a plateau of activity which should get the dancefloors reeling with its controlled but still frenzied sound. If you're unsure of the first one, this track will win you over!
Conclusion:
Randy Katana causes controversy with Jinx Records' first release. In my eyes, I like it, especially 'Play It Loud' on the flip. Its a real party track. All the big names have provided the rest of the conclusive proof - another winner for Mr. Katana and a welcome return for Jinx Records.
