Paul van Dyk is very much one of the big hitters on the trance scene at the moment and has been for many years before. I would say he will continue to be for many years to come. Along with his new compilation he has released a new artist track entitled ‘The Other Side’ Featuring mixes from Martin Roth and Deep Dish.
A man who has a very good chance of becoming DJ Mag’s voted number 1 DJ this year brings his artistic trance brush out again to unleash another masterpiece. Reviewed here are the original, Martin Roth and Deep Dish mixes. For something more along the breakbeat line you should check out Marc Spoon’s mixes of this new track which feature on the double 12” and CD releases.
Original Mix
There is one thing Paul seems to give his tracks and that’s a nice bit of pace. After a nice faded bass line the track slides in a short burst of vocal followed by the explosive bass line and very banging kick. Male vocals in tracks don’t usually work, but I’d say here is one example that they do. Into the build up of this mix the male vocals come in feeding you into a nice piano riff and lots of nice little background sounds. The first main break see’s the bass fade away and a very gentle guitar melody to go with the piano strings. All is calm and relaxed until you hear the build coming in. Bang, the main bass kicks back in and your slap bang in the middle of another Paul van Dyk classic. The track settles into a rhythm with the male vocals giving you the story before another build down and build up comes into force. The guitar and piano sounds used along with nice placement of the vocals make this a very enjoyable track.
Martin Roth Remix
From the many new faces and names you see appearing on the scene each year Martin Roth is one I have found particularly enjoyable. He now has a sound that is very recognisable in the way you can tell it’s a track produced by him, hard and driving trance with a deep edge to it. He’s kept this remix in the uplifting style of the original but added his own spices to it. A very solid intro feeds in the vocals and breaks into a guitar piano riff with a deep melody driving in the background. They fade away as the bass comes back in main melody kicks into gear. The male vocals work as well in this track as they do the original. Martin Roth gives it a very aggressive feel without tweaking with the main breakdown too much. Another fine remix by the German producer.
Deep Dish Remix
Deep Dish is mainly known for their house music and they give Paul’s track the full house treatment here. As I understand it this remix came about as a favour for Paul remixing one of Deep Dish’s latest release ‘Say Hello’, its that or the other way round I forget which. If you’re thinking this is anything like the two uplifting monsters on the first side of the vinyl then think again. A very solid thumping house bassline opens this track which chugs along at a nice pace. The elements are here to be found though and being fed in is the melody nicely in the background along with the male vocals. After some nice sounds at the beginning the guitar riff very nicely comes in and makes its presence. The best way to describe this track is a nice steady house beat making use of the vocal, guitar riff and piano samples to create a very relaxing dreamy style of track.
Conclusion:
When ever a big name releases a track there is always the hype to go with it, people building it up into something which it is not. I’m sure you’ve heard this track being played by some of the big spinners on the scene and rightly so as it’s a very good piece of work from Paul. There’s something there for the house jocks on the flip but the main tracks offer nothing but banging bass lines and big builds to make the earth vibrate. I do think that a lot of people may slate this latest release, I’m not sure why but it’s a feeling I have. It’s been released a few weeks now and in my opinion its one worth adding to the record shelves.
