The sixth release on this up and rising label is a track by David Dowsett under his succesful Factoria guise. The full release includes three mixes and is being played by the likes of Armin van Buuren and Above & Beyond, who all praise it one of the tunes of the moment... Are they right?
2005 has already seen two other Factoria releases on different labels. 'Collision Course' and 'Twisting Free' have been doing the rounds for a few months now, both doing damage in their own way by being picked up by some key players. 'Kissed By An Angel' is, next to the names mentioned in the intro, already being caned by Johan Gielen, Menno de Jong, The Thrillseekers, Ronski Speed and many more. Time to find out what this newest outing is like.
A-side: Factoria's Beautiful Haze Mix The foundations of the build-up of this track rely on a constantly retained melodic vibe using layers of elevating melodies on top of each other, guided onwards by a fairly basic bassline and use of percussion. The drive that's being thrown into the sound spectrum is rather nice though, combining some tight string sounds with the mass of melodic mania that we were already experiencing. The breakdown goes on in building out the strings, then to be followed by a subtle yet very uplifting melody. It's not too complicated, but does know how to catch your attention by being somewhat catchy along the lines. While the production of this tune is very crisp and clean, it does miss something when looking at originality. It's all quite generic, resulting in a piece of trance you won't be writing your parents about. Rating: 6,5/10
B1: Arksun Remix You'll immediately notice that a somewhat tougher and darker atmosphere is being created in this interpretation by using a fierce kickdrum, some eerie sounding beeps and a firm use of both percs and basses. The melodies flowing out of the build remind of the A1 mix every now and then, but they sound a lot fresher! The overall approach is quite relaxed, but the amount of speed that's being thrown into the build is magnificent because of the fact that all the melodies tend to blend into each other perfectly. I really, really like what Arksun did in the break: a wicked high, slightly distorted sounding synth plays this infectious, emotive melody, then to be combined with a faster set of chords to finish things off. I see why Armin has made this a Tune of the Week in one of his ASOT shows now! The combined more tough beats, neat lil' melody during the break and good climax make this a superb remix. Two thumbs up! Rating: 8,5/10
B2: DST-7 Remix DST-7 is another one of David's aliases, concentrating on more progressive, experimental tracks judging by the sounds of it. Stabbing dark basses are combining themselves with a chilled out use of percussion, led by some hints to a few of the chord progressions we heard in the other mixes as well. Enhancing itself every second, the tune definitely knows how to keep you listening, especially when the breakdown commences! The inventiveness is just churning out of this, because Dave has implemented an almost rock-guitar sounding synth to guide the main melodies along. The originality cup definitely goes to this mix! It's relaxing, but danceable because of the constant mix of good percs, tight basslines and well fitting in melodies. Good work! Rating: 8/10
Conclusion:
Though I don't like Factoria's Beautiful Haze Mix that much, the two other mixes definitely make up for it! Arksun has turned the tune into a bigroom trancer with that cool tiny melody I just can't seem to stop talking about. The DST-7 mix incorporates some very original stuff, still keeping most of the original melodic structure intact. A more than fine release!
