The exciting and criminally neglected record label at times called Kanpai Records comes out with a new CD by Little Plastic Pilots. Check this out.
Little Plastic Pilots – Little Plastic Pilots (Kanpai Records)
Little Plastic Pilots is the alias of a man named Sam Nelson and he fits the ethos of Kanpai Records. Kanpai Records releases some really good records but they don’t seem to get all the press that they so richly deserve. It seems that they are the best kept secret in the music industry because they seem to release some real good stuff like Peas – Filter, which was just extraordinary. Well Little Plastic Pilots was sent to me and a friend of mine had told me that it was something that I just had to listen to.

1.Words and Letters in Color 2.There’s a shipwreck down there/from lamey to L.A 3.Love Song 4.The Grumpy Chinaman 5.A Courtyard full of Sun 6.A Ram is Born 7.Lagunita Fog 8.Spring or Winter 9.Fighting Action Figures 10.Sleep Well
1.Words and Letters in Color
Track one starts with an emotional direction, with a genius bassline with some soft synths that just get you hooked. I love how this immediately tries to grab you and pull you in, which it achieves in very short but very well. This reminds me of Boards of Canada for some reason and this is in the same mold. Robotic voices serve as the voices for this track and this robotic voice keeps coming in and saying “Bitch”, which is always a big plus in my book because I love sweary vocals that are done well. The track does not deviate from the original direction but it’s a joy to listen to. It is so relaxing.
2. There’s a shipwreck down there/from lamey to L.A
This starts like track one, with a real emotional effort and the keyboards with the weaping lines are just coupled together nicely. It is really chilled and really nice and it has a bit of ambient in it with the nicely drawn out lines. The bassline takes its time to show up, which is a minute and a half into the emotive piece. It adds to what has already been established on this disc. I like how an unknown can simply come out of nowhere and provide you a disc that you play over and over for a long time but that is the music industry for you. The deep dark vocal that comes in about three minutes into this piece is really weird but it fits in so nicely. It proves the point that this album is going places, the final five minutes just continue what has already been established. Well Done
3.Love Song
As the first two tracks have been emotional, this continues the trend, do we see something deliberate? You be the judge. I love how this really moves me and it’s beautifully put together and its so relaxing and it does remind me of Boards of Canada for some reason. Its really smooth and the chords just hit the target and it really shows that there is so much good music out there but money to buy them all and time to listen them all are the two things standing in the way.
4.The Grumpy Chinaman
This is a short interlude but it uses heavy keys, which are quite catchy, which is a shame that it was not made into a real full song but hey I’m not the artist.
5. A Courtyard full of Sun
This is definitely one for the beach and I’m always up for that, even thought Canadian Summer is finished and the cold dark days are coming, which makes me open up a section of my CDs and Vinyl for those days. I love how the melody and the bird sounds intertwine and how it sounds so light and melodic. Its really strong and it will remind you more of Spring than Summer but I would still take it to the beach.
6.A Ram is Born
This is interlude number two and its some vocodered voice talking rubbish, actually I cannot understand the vocal very well but it is really creepy but it breaks the tension.
7. Lagunita Fog
This is driving electronic music with a downbeat mentality, it has some really strong melody backed by a subtle drum machine pattern that makes up the bassline. It is chilled and laidback like most of this album, which has been really good so far. I love how Little Plastic Pilots pushes his unique melody and its nice that Kanpai Records is a place for those more niche market CDs. This CD is extraordinary and we are only on track seven.
8.Spring or Winter
I imagine that this was not a question that was made to be asked but in Canada, where I hail from, it is a tough question because Spring means Stanley Cup Playoffs and the thaw and Winter means more hockey, so it’s a tough call. This is a terribly short track and I wish it was longer because the melody is so precise and so well done. There is not much bassline here, just melody with keys for nearly two minutes.
9.Fighting Action Figures
This is more electroish compared to the first eight tracks but it still retains its downbeat sensibility. Here we use some weird chords that are all jumbled together, it seems like one big mess but it is really not, it is really different I guess.
10.Sleep Well
Here is another thing that most people they did better at, which is sleep. Anyway, this is completely relaxing and it finishes off the CD on a high note, it is really good and it draws things to a close.
Conclusion:
The CD might be a bit too short but it really shows that there are many people with musical genius who make CDs that you need to listen to, it is just tracking them down and Kanpai Records is just the home for those. Little Plastic Pilots is a very warm and well made disc that is perfect for Spring or early Fall days, where you just want to sit outside and watch the scenery, while listening to music
