Distraekt offshoot, Distreaktions next release will be what's described as "superb deep EP" by DJ Sun & Virus J...
DJ Sun & Virus J are a Lithuanian duo, with previous releases on Stereo Productions offshoot Tribo which, if you're a fan of it's Iberican sound, speaks volumes in itself. A trawl of the web yields various hits for the duo, but very few in English, which is a shame as, considering the high standard of this release, they deserve a longer introduction from us.
Cocain
The EP title track is a deep and moody affair that builds steadily with a driving, rumbling bassline throughout. A haunting male vocal, which is also the tracks namesake, is used alongside some sweeping fx which distract (no pun intended) away from the groove subtly enough to ensure that it always remains focussed.
A simple, well thought out arrangement can sometimes make for a better tune, which this track illustrates perfectly. Each element of the track compliments the others extremely well, which in places hides the fact that there is actually quite a lot more going on. The track weighs in a tad over 10 minutes, but it does not drag - again testament to the outstanding arrangement.
Get Drunk
Instantly you know this is going to be the more driving of the two tracks. Some tasty bongo and congo loops set the mood and keep you hooked on the groove from start to finish. Although driving, there are some more melodic elements to this track in the form of a very subtle piano loop that, even if your not a fan of the instrument, will still hit the mark. What at first sounds like a twisted FX, is in-fact a cleverly disguised spoken vocal that, because of the vocoded feel, reminds of Underworld.
The track is a tad under the 10 minute mark but, again, does not drag on. This is the sort of track that DJ's love to mix as it glides effortlessly from start to finish.
Conclusion:
This is not the usual drum heavy sound you might expect from Distraekt, but it is still an excellent package. Its deep versatile sound will appeal to most as it could fit into almost every set of this genre.
