The competition to GU's mighty reign is known as EQ/Stomp from Australia or Balance as we know them. They have decided to release an Australian take on Electro. Does it go in the usual German Minimal Electro direction or does it pick real tracks?
Balance presents Electric – Volume 1 – Compiled and Mixed by Gavin Keitel
Balance seems to be everywhere these days and they are actually trying to compete with the almighty Global Underground. They are certainly creating a brand worth remembering with three discs with Balance 007 by Chris Fortier and upcoming Balance 008, done by Desyn M. This is their tribute to what has been the obvious sound of 2005, electro and electro house. So they got Gavin Keitel, who is a foreign name to me and most likely Australian to mix this disc.
Tracklist
1.Inaqui Marin – Six 2.Osunlade – Pride (Tiefschwarz remix) 3.Drama Society – Crying Hero (Tiga Remix) 4.Robert Babicz – Mover 5.Einmusik – Jittery Heritage (Egoexpress Mix) 6.Hugg and Pepp – Snabeln (Elektrofant EP) 7.Further – Stay with Me 8.Double X – City Lights 9.Sasse – Soul Sounds (Dirt Crew Solid Diamond Mix) 10.DJ T – Rising 11.Dirk Leyers – New Serious One (Wellen EP) 12.Broker/Dealer – Boots and Pants (Dig Deep EP) 13.Superpitcher – Happiness (LP Version)
This disc is refreshing from all the garbage that has been filtering my desk in the last few weeks, mostly from discs that I bought. The disc starts out with an almost minimal electro track that leads into progressive with the depth and vastness of it. I love how Six easily pushes into your mind that it won’t be any paint by numbers mix. Tiefschwarz’s remix of Pride comes in at track and what happened to those boys, they used to make incredible house tracks but now they are obsessed with making minimal german electro house remixes and tunes. This will annoy you at times because of the vocal and the minimal nature of the track.
Everyone’s hero Tiga shows up with a remix at track 3, the vocal is really grating at the nerves but the nasty driving bassline and the nasty chords just make this OK. It becomes apparent that the German Minimal scene has had some tremendous effect on this disc. “Mover” is a nasty piece of audio creation because it has that tremendous drive with those weird noises at the back. Its really a gem in my book but some of you might beg to differ. Egoexpress Mix’s Jittery Heritage starts to really build the mix and it has some very quick snares and some warm sound effects with a grinding bassline. It really does the business and this mix is starting to grow on me.
Now what would a compilation be without the Dahlbacks? It would be probably be a little lifeless, they continue to push out quality release after another. I love the keyboards that really push this track with the warm jittery synths which surround you. You rarely can go wrong with the Dahlbacks these days!. “Stay With Me” pushes things into driving house with that hint of electro and I like how Keitel has gone that direction, few deejays dare do it and even fewer do it well. Double X’s City Lights is also quite driving but its more electro than anything else but it continues to push that tempo up and that makes the fans happy all the time.
Sasse’s Soul Sounds track pushes things to more minimal german electro house but the snare rolls here are quite drawing. It does seem like a step down from City Lights but a minute into the track, you hear even more driving music and that’s a step up. Music is never quite what it seems. DJ T’s nice minimal house workout called “Rising” with a blinding riff and an addictive hook pushes in at track ten and it continues to push this CD into driving electro house rather than confusing German stuff for the niche market. Dirk Leyers’ New Serious One takes this into more minimal territory but it still seems to improve on the tempo and drive, like most good mixes should. I find that I’m shocked because I guessed that this CD would be confusing German Minimal House for the niche market and its surprisingly not.
Boots and Pants is the second last track before this mix CD ends off and its nice smooth house with an incredible riff and some vocodered noises. I find it really unique and it improves on what already has been laid down. Superpitcher’s Happiness ends off the CD in a weird German Minimal House kind of way and I thought it could have been ended in a better way but the last track brings everything to a halt.
Conclusion:
Its actually quite good, its not 100% electro and its not boring German Minimal Electro either, it is quite driving in places with some well placed and well chosen tracks. Be sure to give this a listen at some point, it’s a real gem.
