Belgian producer Sven Maes steps up to release his new single on the infamous HCR imprint. Featuring two tech-influenced mixes, let's find out what damage these tunes can do!
Many of you might recognize the Svenson alias of his longlasting collaboration with Johan Gielen with whom he created tunes like 'The Beauty Of Silence' and 'Twisted', that still know how to get floors going these days. In 2004, the duo decided to go their own way, resulting in the release of the first Svenson EP: 'Inside Outside / The Devils' LSD'. It featured a more uplifting trance track on side A, while the flip had a more experimental techy track on it. Time to find out what 'Wicked Life' is like...
A-side: Laserlight Apparatus Mix The whole structure of this track relies heavily on a wagonload of dark synths, accompanying FX and a deep and driving use of percussion. Grinding sawsynths, eerie sounds and rolling basses aplenty during the build, with a bunch of rather cool sounds behind them to induce a somewhat mysterious vibe to be created. The breakdown sets the standard immediately by powering up this stabbing, constantly altering riff that energizes itself on and on, becoming a kind of infectious affair with its repeating and up and down going chords. While all this sounds rather cool during the break, it didn't really do it for me during the climaxes. The main riff somehow gets rid of a lot of the track's previously created drive, which is quite a shame really. While it is catchy, it lacks a certain amount of agility and therefore isn't able to fuel the track in an optimal way. This is a darkish trancer with a lot of cool FX coming with it, but unfortunately it lacks melody-wise. Rating: 6,5/10
B-side: Infectious Pump Mix The overall sound of this mix is a bit harsher, cleaner and faster. It includes thick bassdrums, a very neat bouncing bassline and synthwork that reminded me a lot of earlier Svenson & Gielen productions. The best thing about this interpretation is the amount of supercool riffs that has been implemented during the building parts. This is infectious and pumping indeed! The melodies just create this atmosphere that will surely make you bounce on the dancefloor or in your comfy chair. The main melody from the A-side has been kept completely intact, but this time it works out a lil' better mainly because of that whobbling bassline and different percussion. Everything returns a second time, which is a good thing in my opinion because them building synths are just plain cool. This mix is definitely better than the one on the A-side! Rating: 7/10
Conclusion:
Although the Laserlight Apparatus Mix does have a lot of great effects coming with it, it just isn't able to satisfy me when looking at the climaxes. The Infectious Pump Mix has these great catchy, fast melodies during the build, which certainly make it differ a lot from its counterpart on the flip. I guess a combination of the cool elements from both tracks into a new track would definitely give it a huge boost. Overall, this vinyl can't measure with High Contrast's earlier releases, but it's OK nonetheless.
