The latest addition to the 2 Play catalogue is this 2 track release from two up and coming tech artists - Precursor and Frisky Warlock...
The two artists behind 2 Play's latest release are Leon Bolier and Freek Geuze, a.k.a. Precursor and Frisky Warlock. Bolier has had a few outings on the RR imprint and we've seen Geuze with some tough tracks on 2 Play already. Now they've come together and gone head to head to produce some tech trance which is more stunning than ever before - 'Quotations' and 'Android'...
:: Precursor Vs. Frisky Warlock - Quotations / Android :: 2 Play :: 2PLAY011
A: Quotations 'Quotations' is a real journey of a track. It covers a vast distance from when it begins with clear, crisp percussion through the addition of deep, rolling basses to stark, techy synthlines dominating the track. The first half of the track features those really techy offbeat snares which add a great twist to the rhythm and some semi trancey hooks. It all creates a good build up to the breakdown which showcases the two different sides that the track possesses. The first is the gentler, melodic, trancey side with the synth hooks and calming sounds. The second is a much harsher, techier side which features some great twisted sfx and synths. The rest of the track switches in and out between the two sides, giving it real character, maintaining the fine balance between soft and hard.
AA: Android 'Android' has a much tougher sound with stronger, more menacing beats and a fairly tribal style to its percussive elements. Things get moving quickly thanks to the fat rolling bass and the swift addition of coarse synthy sounds. One of the main foci of this track is a spectacularly clever combination of two totally different things. The first is a coarse, stabbed synth rhythm which has a tense and eager feeling surrounding it. The second is a fairly dainty melody played by what sounds like some kind of electronic harp. This is a fantastic contrast of sounds and coupled with the killer chord change at the end of each phrase it creates something utterly compelling which is essential for tech trance. Again we're seeing the two producers combine very different elements into something that works fantastically. A fairly long and abstract techy break sees our harp replaced by something more synthy and the stabbed rhythm turn to longer, thicker synth padding. The final parts of the track are really driving and techy and so should have no problem in working the floors to a frenzy and pushing them on into the night. Quality!
Conclusion:
I was very interested to see that these two artists had worked together to produce these tracks because of their good individual work in the past. The results are awesome - two high powered tech trance tracks, both very individual, but born from the same ideas: two contrasts working together. You can see lots of thought has been put into these productions. Out of the two, 'Android' is my favourite - the chord changes are blinding and it has fantastic drive and a quality techy edge.
