We contacted hard houser Jon Doe to discuss remixing particularly the recent Lost Witness '7 Colours' remix. (This interview was done by UT-DJ, and presented at [i:Vibes] with their permission!)
How do you choose a track to remix? They choose me, the record company phones Honeypot Management, but I still get to choose which ones I do.
What features do you pick out to include in the remix or do you try to alter the track a lot? I usually re-write the whole thing and just use the tunes or instruments that I liked, sometimes not all the parts are made available to me.
What sort of equipment do you use when remixing? Everything that is useful for that particular sound, so it varies.
How long does it take to remix a track? Anything between 2 days to a week, sometimes things don't go as you plan and thats when it's time to do something else and come back to it later, an plain remix does nothing for the record company or your future in remixing!
What advice would you give any upcoming artist who want to be a remixer? You dont choose to be a remixer, it usually comes from previous records. Stick at the production and learn how to do everything that you hear.
What are you thoughts on the Jon Doe remix of Lost Witness '7 Colours'? I was only given the vocals, so not so much of a remix as I never heard the original track, I hope they release the mix with the harder breakdown, the track is almost the same but gives it a different edge.
What can we expect in the near future from Jon Doe? Amongst other things, another remix for Tidy Trax.... 'Hazia', Triple remix of Love Revolutions 'Give it to me Baby' and an E.P. on Honeypot Records, a four track release with quite varied styles.
