Oxygen's latest offering is a slice of prog and tech from a new project by someone you should be looking out for at the moment - Niklas Harding...
For his first outing on Oxygen, Niklas presents his Blackout alias and serves up a pair of interesting tracks, one remixed by Maori, delivering more of what we've been promised by this label.
:: Niklas Harding Pres. Blackout - Shadows :: Oxygen Recordings :: OX010
A: Shadows (Original Mix) This Original Mix of 'Shadows' is a slow and gentle trip into the world of progressive trance. As soon as the percussive intro is over and the thick bass hits you, it reminded me instantly of Markus Shulz' style, especially his famous Cold Harbour remixes. This track is textbook prog - thick, heavy beats backed by a prominent layer of crisp percussion plus a myriad of ghostly synths which intermingle with each other to create a bed of calming sound. The breakdown is long and ambient but it grows in intensity and also allows the traxck to progress into something more melodic. The added melodic element is a good climax to the track and it provides some extra time for the track to slowly cut things out and work its way to a close.
AA: Shadows (Maori Remix) Maor Levi steps up for this remix and turns out something we're quite used to hearing from Oxygen. We're back to that wicked tough and dark techy sound - it has to be said, theres something very Sander van Doorn-ish about this remix! The snappy driving percussion and deep, throbbing bass really fuel this track and push it along nicely. The most notable element though is the use of synths and sfx. The synths are stark pads and are highly warped, twisted, cut up and repeated, creating a kind of technological sounding melodyline. Its very interesting to listen to and must've been very well thought out in order to get it just right. Inspiring tech trance!
Conclusion:
These two lovely tracks are very highly contrasted. The A side Original Mix can only suit those progressive tranceheads out there but Maori has twisted it and crafted it into a tough, dark techy beast of a track which you shouldn't miss out on.
