The latest release from the growing Surface Recordings is a collaboration between Drax and Scott Mac with a whole bunch of remixes from trance heavyweights Riley & Durrant, Mac Zimms and DJ Choose...

The first thing you must notice about this release is the sheer bargain that it is. We're promised a trancey reminder of the summer and looking at Surface's previous releases theres no reason to doubt them. Anyway, just look what you're getting - not only is this trance from Drax and Scott Mac, but theres a total of four tracks on offer - the original and remixes from big names Riley & Durrant, Mac Zimms and DJ Choose! Read on!

:: Drax & Scott Mac - Must Have Been A Dream
:: Surface Recordings
:: SURFACE005

1) Must Have Been A Dream (Original Mix)

The original gets off to a good start with convincing beats and a compelling bassline. The sound is firm, getting things moving solidly. Subtle pads filter their way in along with gentle vocal snippets in the background. There is a melodic build up in the background which you notice primarily in the beautiful breakdown. Layers of sweeping pads playing a sublime chord progression is what its about here. There is a hypnotic melodic hook laced over the top which captures the moment just in time for the vocal element of this track to come about. The vocal plays a big role in this production. It's quite story-esque if you like, and it envelopes you as the story is beautifully sung out. There are some really nice harmonies plus the melodic backing chords fit perfectly with it, making this one super fine piece of trance.

2) Must Have Been A Dream (Riley & Durrant Remix)
Riley & Durrant provide something which has a little more in terms of pace and drive. The bassline really pushes things along as does the presence of some really jittery hi-hats in the background. This extra-trancey remix comes in three distinct parts. Once its got itself flowing, the vocal line begins, taking you into the smooth and relaxing breakdown. This long breakdown remains quite ambient until it also becomes vocally driven with some superb, spine tinglingly good pads filling the background. Finally, when the track drops back in the lead melody takes dual ownership of the reigns with the vocal. Again this is an excellent amalgamation of parts, just done the Riley & Durrant way - the trancey synths, driving bass and sweet vocals combine to create something which overwhelms you as you listen. Really nice trance.

3) Must Have Been A Dream (Max Zimms Remix)
Mac Zimms makes a welcome appearance here with his own, more techy interpretation of 'Must Have Been A Dream'. The beats are thick and strong and the percussive element is crisp and very present, as you'd expect from Zimms. The main element here is a tough, coarse and rough techy synth which stabs out a rhythmic melody as the track is pumped along by the strong beats. The twist to this track is the trancey interlude that the breakdown provides. Its all pads and synths with some small vocal snippets which are used really nicely as pads in some places. The lead melody makes a fairly brief appearance too as Zimms builds things up and throws the track back down in full force with the stomping beats and techy synth to finish things off.

4) Must Have Been A Dream (DJ Choose Remix)
Choose gets straight in there with his trademark strong beats and thick, rolling bassline. More of his recognisable style is demonstrated with the stark and sinister chord changes. that come after the quiet vocal breakdown. This is big DJ Choose stuff and the summery trancey element has been replaced with a much darker strength and drive. One for the harder floors out there which also shows that we haven't seen all of what Surface Recordings has to offer yet!

Conclusion:
This is a great release! The Original Mix is exquisite trance and then you get all the other remixes to boot! You simply can't sniff at the quality you have on offer from artists like Riley & Durrant, Mac Zimms and DJ Choose. All on one action packed vinyl, awesome!
