In 2004 Dave Joy and Climax69 put their minds together into one project. Simplex D.S.N was the result and now have the new started label “Thrust Groove Records” chose to re-release their debute song “Skywalker”.
A1) 2006 Mix The first remix isn’t anything special at all. Somehow it feels like something is missing and it really lacks something fresh. After a long start the breakdown comes with some mellow strings. At the same time a pumping melody is gently introduced and when the tune is ready to explode nothing happens, unfortunately. Climax69 and Dave Joy are some of the better acts in the trance industry today (in my opinion of course) but if they can’t deliever anything better than this they should probably stop working together and focus more on their own projects. If one should shorten the song with all of its build ups to like 6 minutes instead of 8:40, I think the tune would have a lot more authority - 5/10.
B1) XLR Project Remix When I had almost lost all of my faith, the XLR Project came and saved me. A dark feeling is there right from the beginning and I can straight away feel that this tune is going to kick ass and just so you know, I’m rarely mistaken. ;-) The song just grows and grows and it has like a really edgy “Flutlicht” style to it which I really enjoy. After a chillout breakdown everything almost stops until the original melody kicks in with a rough, really neat effect. The tune explodes and the atmosphere is outstanding. Even though this remix was released back in 2004 the tune still does the job - 9/10.
B2) Original Climax69 Mix This tune doesn’t make me as ecstatic as the previous tune, unfortunately… Also this tune is from the original vinyl and on the whole its “ok” I guess… Like the 2006 version, this remix also lacks something solid and it feels kind of dull. However it has a more energetic feeling than the 2006 remix and some more fine elements which gives it a higher rating - 6/10.
Conclusion:
Nothing special at all. The only real light I can see is the good old XLR Project remix which still gets me to jump all over the place. Other than that I’m disappointed at Dave Joy and Climax69, the tune has potential but they haven’t managed to develop it any further. Another release of this tune with remixes by "Beam Vs. Sean Tyas" and "DJ Napo & Alex Trackone" is on the way and I really hope that it will be better.
The final rate is a pale 7/10 thanks to three simple letters; XLR.
