Yakuza's latest instalment is a double tracked slice of trance from Galen Behr, the man behind the well known Passiva and Ava Mea projects...
:: Galen Behr - Time Will Tell / Eye Of The Storm :: Yakuza :: YAK009
A) Time Will Tell The thing that struck me first about 'Time Will Tell' was the cleanliness of the sound. Everything is well defined and little is left to the imagination as the track easily flows along due to the perfect partnership made between the bass and the backing synths. The track is in build up mode all the way to the breakdown, teasing us with cool synths and a melodic chord progression. The breakdown itself brings in a really catchy and melodic hook, played by a slightly unorthodox synth. The synth contrasts well with the smooth bass and backing synths. The track climaxes and drops as you'd expect - everything kicks back into full flow with the melodic hook playing its important role. This track has a totally uplifting feeling to it - a really joyous sound. It keeps on elevating things as the chord progressions in the background are cleverly shifted at one point, providing some cool and subtle melodic variation. The focus of this track is the hook and rightly so, as this is where most of the trancey, euphoric feeling comes from. This one will keep you happy, smiling and on the dancefloor also.
B) Eye Of The Storm The track on the B-side of the vinyl is a lot calmer and relaxed than the A-side. There is a tribal feel to the beat and a relaxed, slow rhythmic pulse to the bass. A small, chilled break introduces some ambient synth backing - a nice progression which gives a real influx of that chilled feeling. The breakdown comes in two parts. The first is calm, quiet and chilled. It begins to demonstrate a soothing chord progression and then this change is used to bring on the melody. What we have here is more complex than what we heard on the A-side. Its a longer melody which develops itself over time and again Galen Behr has crafted it in such a way that its sound blends beautifully with the bass and backing sounds. Beautifully melodic and slightly chilled, this one will also spread trancey delight on the floors.
Conclusion:
This is a really strong release for both Yakuza and Galen Behr. You've got two excellent pieces of trance on one great record.
