One of Finland's newest trance exports is called Peetu Sainio. He brings us a release on a sublabel of the Holland-based FTM Records, which is already being caned by Tiësto and Armin van Buuren...
Peetu has released two tunes on Spinnin' Records in the past: his remix for Robert Natus & Arkus P.'s 'Hardcore Salsa' has a very driving techno-ish ambience coming with it, and so does his mix of a tune he made with Alegria called 'Gueverra'. The two tunes that are being reviewed here have a somewhat different structure coming with them... Time to check them out!
A-side: A Bigger Palace As can be heard from the percussion and lil' gimmicks during the first part of this track, you'll notice that this is going to be a driving trancey affair. A very distinct sounding, rolling bassline injects a tight portion of drive into the tune, being powered up even more by vastly growing percussive elements and a subtle use of stabbing synth melodies, calm melodic structures and slight hints to some very original sounding vocal lines. And them vocal lines are exactly what make this track stand out: they create an immensely mysterious, yet supercool vibe throughout the track's body. The break first incorporates comfy strings and a well thought out Asian-sounding melody, but then everything bursts loose by bringing in the full vocal experience: in some way they remind me of Asia, Tibet or whatever you want to associate with it. Fact is that they definitely have this kind of addictive effect and fit in perfectly with all the other elements. The last part of the break and the climax rely completely on one of the stabbing synths we heard earlier, but this time built up with a lot of tension. While I totally adore the build and break, the part after the break kind of disappointed me: it will surely work out on the floors, but it somehow lacks a bit of the originality that the other parts did have. All in all quite an inventive tune! Rating: 7,5/10
B-side: The Battle Directly from the start, you'll most likely notice that this one is a bit harder, with it's deep, grinding bassline and harsh bassdrum. The whole structure of 'The Battle' relies on bongo's, drums, carnivalesque FX and a nice drive. Overall, this reminds me a lot of one of Cave's tunes which served as the Innercity theme song back then. Anyway, more darkness is being brought forward by the introduction of a constantly repeating deep synthline that gradually brings us to the break. The resemblance to Cave is being torpedoed to the highest level here, because of the use of an identical structure and array of sounds. After all the bongo-ing, the dark synthy returns again to bring a climax full of agility that will most likely ignite some dancefloors. Nothing spectacular, just an OK track. Rating: 6,5/10

Conclusion:
'A Bigger Palace' is a neat trancer with great, yet odd vocals and a superb drive. I can see why every big jock is playing it! Talking in terms of originality, the flip is quite the opposite of the A-side: it does have a nice driving coming with it, but all the bongo elements remind me just a bit too much of other tunes. 'A Bigger Palace' is what you should get this vinyl for!
