The latest on the revered Fundamental Records is a two track release from trance heavyweights and Fundamental regulars Solid Globe and Nickelson...
:: Solid Globe Vs. Nickelson - Black Wood / Crystal Water :: Fundamental :: FUN522
A: Solid Globe - Black Wood To begin, we have 'Crystal Water'. It has that unmistakeable Solid Globe feel and sound to it right from the first beat - a steady yet weighty beat backed by an almost electro sounding bassy synth. As the track grows, the melodies are released and developed early on. Smooth synths in the background provide a nice base for a gentle and basic melody to ingrain itself into the track. This track focuses on guitars as the lead elements. During the calm break, we hear acoustic guitars playing a few chords which provides the backing for a lead synthy electric guitar to play an extended melody over the top. The result is beautiful - as I said earlier it just oozes that Solid Globe sound and this is even more evident when the track kicks back in. As the track progresses we hear more of the classy guitar melodies with some more short breaks to add some variety. Basically a top piece which is a severe pleasure to listen to from start to finish.
B: Solid Globe Vs. Nickelson - Crystal Water Nickelson's influences are clear to pick out here. There is still the gentle synthy presence and bass synths that we're used to hearing from Solid Globe, but the beat here is much stronger and the percussion is more crisp and defined. The track has two sides. One is smooth and gentle - introduced with some orchestral strings in the breakdown and then developed as the track kicks back in. Strings and trance go hand in hand as we all know so this (plus some really well placed piano notes) is good stuff. Next the 'Vs.' element of the track really shows up - its almost as if Solid Globe did the first half of the track and Nickelson did the second. A stronger bass is snare rolled in and we're suddenly hearing a rhythmic stabbed set of trancey chords. There is a huge contrast here from soft trance to something a little darker and much stronger. Quite unexpected and this works in the track's favour. To finish it all off, both sides are merged for one final section and the set of producers have pulled it off flawlessly. So another set of thumbs up for the B-side as well!
Conclusion:
This is another very strong release for Fundamental. More great Solid Globe stuff on the A and something a bit tougher and nicely different on the flip, showing again that Solid Globe and Nickelson work awesomely together.
