Here’s another early Christmas present from Vandit with the release of Second Sun – Playground. Featured on numerous mix CD’s and DJ sets already this track looks set to prop up the front of your record case for a while.
With vandit being Paul van Dyk’s home brand label you can always look for quality with every release. There is support from Italian group Nu-NRG as Second Sun return from their other musical ventures to give us a very nice trance record.
:: A1: Original Mix :: B1: Nu-NRG Mix
The original kicks off with a very hard deep bass drum and a kick to get things going. Slip in the first chords of what seems to me as an almost flute style sample and bang in a few stuttered vocals to give the track a nice little build up before it breaks and builds even more. Just when you think they have forgotten to bang in the melody the track slips into silence and the flute sample heard earlier comes right into play with a slap and bang from the bass line. There’s me thinking that’s the main hook in the track but I’d be wrong but sliding in on the end is a nice spot of percussion using sampled up vocal cuts to add a bit of sparkle to the background. Hard pounding medium paced stuff is this.
Nu-NRG put their magic to this track in usual hi energy style fashion they are famous for. The bass is not so hard but faster and they make use more of the main melody of the track rather than the flute style sampled introduction the original offers. A good kick bang and slap with the kick playing around with build this track up nicely to the melody. The melody comes in and in the build up there are for me a few puzzling vocals slid in there, not sure why they are put in put they don’t damage the track. The track kicks into force and everything is in play. It’s a nicely paced track from Nu-NRG making good use of the original mix’s sounds. Nice stuff from Nu-NRG
Conclusion:
Second Sun have put forward a decent track here. Don’t expect a Dreamland epic from Nu-NRG on remix duty but they have took a very hard pounding track and given it the high energy style treatment. The original would go down very well as a nice hard starter for a set as its more like a fast house record in terms of deep pounding bass. The melody is catchy and the tracks got a nice flow. All in all not the best release on Vandit but by no means the worse, worth adding to the record box.
