Germany based Ligaya Recordings stops by to bring us a re-release of Kenny Hayes' 'Daybreaker', including two mixes by Signum and one by Airbase. Head in for a full review.
Kenny Hayes is a producer from the UK who has mainly been mixing and remixing tunes for the All Around The World label. Recently, he released his single 'Ibiza Sky' on Somatic Sense, which included mixes by Alex M.O.R.P.H. and Mike Shiver. Turbulence Records first picked up 'Daybreaker' and released it on vinyl and CD with the original, Sunshine Funk, Signum and Airbase mixes. Ligaya has picked a select few of these and released them again, so let's check them out.
A-side: Signum Dub Dutch producers duo Signum has become a well respected name in today's trance scene. Classics like 'First Strike' and 'Second Wave' are still being played out, and their more recent tunes and remixes are rocking floors everywhere. This Dub mix relies heavily on that trademark Signum sound. Thick layers of bassline and a crunchy percussion are the main instigators of a huge, full drive that's being brought forward, subtly being fueled onwards by the use of slick effects and multiple melodic layers. The structure of the tune itself is kind of cool and slighly different from your usual trance tune. During the build everything eventually starts to rest on big, stabbing synths and a few catchy chord lines, then for the track to suddenly fall still and showcase some string sounds. No full break has been implemented, but instead a muted version of the percussion returns in a swift way, building itself up together with some simple yet well worked out lil' melodies. The return of the bassline and its companions serve as a true bassheavy moment which will most certainly make your crowd go wild in no-time. Not Signum's best at all, but definitely a well-produced remix with a lot of potential. Rating: 7,5/10
B1: Airbase Elektech Remix As most of you should know by now, Jezper Söderlund is the man responsible for this project. Airbase - 'Escape' is soon to be released on Intuition Recordings, being an amazing tune with a melody to die for. The whole arrangement of the mix that's being reviewed here is totally different. A lot of the percussion immediately reminded me of Talla 2XLC's 'Manifesto', with its crispy FX, deep, steadily whooming bassline and thin but smooth bassdrum. The overall feel of this remix sounds superbly neat and well arranged. Clear, high synths playing slick backing melodies are the main ingredient during the build, with all the other elements slowly evolving to induce an even fuller experience to be created. A few vocals have been implemented as well and used to great effect. They blend in perfectly with the synths used, and are being followed by a huge array of hands-in-the-air string work... But the greatest part has yet to come! Mister Söderlund has outdone himself here by bringing in one of the most energetic, straight-forward and wonderful uplifting melodies I've heard this year. If this doesn't send shivers down your spine, nothing will! The energy and agility are just bursting out right in your face, and combined with the already good percussion definitely result in one of the biggest trance experiences I've heard this year. A wonderful tune which shouldn't be overlooked! Rating: 9/10
B2: Signum Remix This is a more vocal version of the Dub on side A, with the small breaks including most of the vocals we heard in Airbase's mix as well.
Conclusion:
The Airbase remix is simply fantastic. Everything fits together perfectly, and that riff used during the break and climaxes is just out of this world! Signum has also delivered two fine mixes. All in all a superb release! Next up on Ligaya is Aviation's new single, so keep your ears pealed...
