Purple Haze is back and is ready to present another two tracks courtesy of one of the most exciting techy labels around at the moment, Oxygen Recordings...
:: Purple Haze - Eden / Rush :: Oxygen Recordings :: OXO010
A: Eden It's good to see rising star Sander van Doorn bringing some new tunes under his Purple Haze alias. Before this new pair came the popular 'Adrenaline', and 'Eden' picks up where that one left off. The percussion that you can hear at the start of this track has a distinctly tribal feel and sound to it and this offsets the meaty kick very nicely. Again this track, although techy at heart, has a deep and gentle melodic element to it - deep bass notes run through a cool progression, backed by some really eerie sounding synths. The most is made of this during the calming breakdown. Things soon darken up though because the leading synths are twisted and distorted, allowing the track to continue but now with a much more techy edge. The rest of the track is driven by this now tough edged melody, still nicely backed by those deep bass notes. Again another top class example of the different sounds and styles hidden within today's tech trance.
AA: Rush 'Rush' is a punchier sounding track - the crystal clear percussion and solid kick provide a good rhythm for the track to follow. 'Rush' remains quite minimal until about half way through and its then we begin to see some familiar progressions taking shape. Some coarse bass pulses on every other beat and the track is bathed in extra percussion and sfx. There are all sorts of sections that the track progresses through - we hear some breakbeat in the breakdowns and also some gently stabbed rhythmic melodies near to the end of the track. Its like a fusion of tech and prog, the tech gives the track its catchy edge whilst the prog allows a continuous development between sections.
Conclusion:
A strong second release for Purple Haze and another very promising release for Oxygen. I think 'Eden' will be the favourite of the two as it's more akin to Sander's wicked style and also shares its roots with its predecessor, 'Adrenaline'.
