The third release on Ferry Corsten's newly established label is a production by two relatively new producers hailing from Holland. It's being supported by Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk and Ferry Corsten, so let's find out what they like so much about it...
Frost (Rafaël Frost) and Maron (Martijn van der Ven) engaged in their first collaboration by producing a DJ Maron Remix for Three Drives' classic 'Greece 2000', which was released in May 2005 on Massive Drive Recordings. Ferry Corsten picked up their track 'Mute Your Mind' a few months ago and started caning it in all his sets, which eventually led to the signing of the Frost & Maron project to Flashover Recordings. Since then, all the key players have had the tune sitting at the forefront of their recordboxes, and it has also earned a spot on the Trance Energy 2006 compilation and Armin's 2005 Yearmix.
A-side: Original Mix Building up using a blend of deep, gloomy basslines, strong driving percussion and a wicked use of electro-ish effects, this tune grabs your attention immediately by its warm, full sounding structure and great overall drive. The most important element subtly comes forward during one of the first minibreaks, being a superbly well worked out guitar melody that brings forth a soothing and calm yet infectious, very sunny ambiance. No need in turning the heat up in your room, you'll get them summervibes in no-time when listening to this track! Inventively crafted synthwork and a cool backing guitar part blend in perfectly with the main guitar riff, completing the structure of the tune to great effect. Everything's just been worked out so nicely: there's the driving percussion combined with the soothing guitar melody, but on the other hand there's the energetic synths that definitely add a huge boost in energy to the tune. This is a lovely tune which won't be forgotten in a long time. Great! Rating: 8,5/10
B-side: Yield Remix Judging from the more pounding kickdrum and a darker, more grinding bassline, you'll notice that this remix takes on an entirely different approach than the original. Crispy percussion leads the way to a completely new, somewhat emotive melody during the build, which is going to be one of the key elements of this remix later on. The full guitar mania from the original has been implemented at several parts of the tune, but always fades away gently to make place for that wicked, deep set of basses and the very nice new riff we heard earlier. Looking at the complete picture, this remix is a bit more straightforward than the original, but does know how to do its own thing by introducing that more dark approach with the slick bassline and cool new riff. All in all a more than worthy B-side! Rating: 7,5/10
Conclusion:
Both mixes of 'Mute Your Mind' are good, but I prefer the Original because of its sheer ability to bring a mixture of that neat guitar riff, energetic synths and a great drive. The Yield remix sounds a bit darker but definitely adds something to side A using its slightly darker mood and well worked out melodies. All in all a great third release on Flashover which will cause havoc on floors all around the world!
