Trance duo Riley & Durrant are next in line for a release on the Yakuza imprint. We're seeing something slightly different from the boys here along with a tougher remix from Scott Mac on the flip...

A: Neon Eyes (Original Mix)
'Neon Eyes' is a long and slowly building track. The first half of it is solid - hearty rolling bass, rhythmic synths and some tough percussion. A section filled with stabbing synths shows that Riley & Durrant have decided to go for a stronger and less uplifting sound here. The breakdown signals change however. Deep ambience underlays some delicate notes and a building trancey synth hook is grown. It comes out in full force when the track drops back in and although things have now changed into something totally trancey, the energy and strength is still there so the sound is enhanced instead of being toned down. This is a very powerful effect and makes this track a winner.
B: Neon Eyes (Scott Mac Remix)
Scott Mac has gone in more techy and also progressive direction with his remix. The percussion is now one of the most notable elements and theres also a distinct layer of ambience and ghostly notes in the background once the track has established itself. A large percentage of this remix is dominated by the repeating stabs of synth and the only hint of melody is during the quiet breakdown, otherwise the overall feel is quite progressive. There are some nice sections which have some really smooth pads playing beautiful chords which brings in some emotion to the track also. It's an interesting blend of concepts, but doesn't make a final decision on the direction it wants to head in. Still a good track though.
Conclusion:
Yakuza continue to produce a good run of releases with this record. The original should attract most attention I think, what with it's toughness and ultimately trancey goal.
