TD's most recent release is a right-on trancy production by Frenchman Jonathan Blakoe, which includes a remix by Albatross. Support is coming from the likes of Alex M.O.R.P.H., Yves de Ruyter and DJ Choose, so let's find out what we're dealing with here...
This is Total Digital's seventh release, following up on tracks by Krivi, Libero and Kamil Polner, among others. As you might have already noticed from the label's name, their releases can only be purchased in mp3 format on sites like DJDownload, Audiojelly and Trackitdown.
A-side: Original Mix Right from the start, you'll notice that this is going to be a swift, energetic ride into the world of elevating trance. A thick bassdrum, smooth percussion and a rather standard bassline are soon making friends with a constantly building bit of synths that enhances itself more and more throughout the build. Very subtly, a full melody emerges, eventually becoming the lead element creating a nice amount of drive. The breakdown is a very well thought out combination of some guitar-like chords, accompanying strings and again that cool constantly energizing melody. This time around, it becomes a full-featured riff which sounds quite neat combined with the already energetic percussion. One sidenote though is that nothing quite spectacular or inventive happens during the whole track: it's more like a standard trancer, but it does know how to stand out a bit with that riff building itself out all the time. All in all, not bad!
B-side: Albatross Remix Albatross is a producer from Russia called Alexei Zakharov. He has released his tune 'Mortality' back in November on TD as well, and now signs for a remix of 'Wonder'. The feel that comes forward when listening to the track's complete structure differs quite significantly from the original. A more laidback use of percussion and an overall less straight-forward attitude have been implemented, backed by a slick, deep bassline with a seriously wicked sound which goes up and down all the time, giving the tune a very typical, strong atmosphere. Subtle sets of bubbly, high synth layers take care of an injection of a good amount of drive throughout the last parts of the build, then for the tune to splash out into a stringy interlude. The rest of the break is all about a superb take on one of the original's melodies: this time around, we're not being given the full uplifting treatment but more of a proggy interpretation instead. A high, tickly riff plays some slightly emotive chords, which sound great backed with that distinct bassline and really enhances the significant feel that was already being brought forward. A very cool take on the original!
Conclusion:
If I had to choose between the mixes, I'd definitely go for Albatross' remix. It combines a very cool bassline with a great, nifty melody, enhanced by that distinct proggy vibe. The original is a tad too standard for my liking, but will surely attract people who like a fix of uplifting trance.
