After four long years, they finally released the Delta Heavy DVD!, the greatest tour of the 2000's!.

Sasha and John Digweed present Delta Heavy DVD (System/Graphite Media)

Do I even need to give you the skinny on the careers of Sasha or John Digweed? If you have not heard of the duo, chances are you have been living in a cave since the late 80’s. Anyway it is 2006 and finally they decide to release the long awaited DVD for 2002’s greatest tour aka Delta Heavy and while the rest of us have been long awaiting Delta Heavy 2, in that time, some of us have grown up, had kids, got married or just quit the scene completely because of old age.

To get rid of the cobwebs that are your brains, too much clubbing does that to the mind eh?, I’ll refresh the new people to Delta Heavy. It was born out of an idea from Jimmy Van M, Sasha and John Digweed while watching a movie in the States. They decided to take their duo DJ show and make it a stadium like atmosphere. So they covered most of America and some of Canada on a tour bus in six weeks from April 2002 to May 2002. It actually began in Miami, Florida at a totally packed Arena in late March 2002 and it was featured as an Essential Mix on Radio One, which won Essential Mix of the year in 2002.

Now the DVD follows Sasha and Digweed on a tour bus, with interviews about their lives and some of the cities on the tour. It does feature some music but it is rather brief and it tends to leave some things out. They also seem to show a few big American cities and leave out a crapload of places, like Toronto (which I think had the best vibe) or Montreal or even Rochester. You understand why they did the tour, you understand what it was like traveling on the bus from gig to gig and how much went into the tour but it leaves out a lot, you get the brief views of Digweed dropping Heaven Scent at a club but you really don’t see the club jump for joy, which was a disappointment.

Since the DVD can’t do the actual tour any justice, I’ll tell you about my experience going to see it, for those who never got to see the tour in 2002 and then maybe you would understand the tour, while watching the DVD. I saw the Delta Heavy tour when it hit the Koolhaus in Toronto on April 5th, 2002 and it was probably one of the most expensive tickets I ever bought in my life (over 50 bucks CDN). When I got in (10pm), there were speakers all over the floor and it was loud, I mean beyond loud. The sound system was originally from Twilo (RIP) and they took it with them for the tour. Jimmy Van M opened with a set that kept building and building till 11:58pm, then a tall Englishman appeared from behind a pillar and everyone knew it was John Digweed and the crowd roared, it was packed but everyone showed up with full spirit, we were jumping by then. So Digweed got ready to get going and then the lasers hit and I mean lasers, it was definitely a reach for the stars event for the next four hours. Digweed played some unknown tracks to me, then about 15 mins later, Sasha appeared and the crowd roared even more.

Sasha decided to get going with tracks like Solid Sessions – Janiero but it was the Holden Mix and during the main build up, while Sasha was jumping and by then Digweed was jumping around in the crowd dancing, then he slowed down and started to walk around and talk with people (it was there, where I met him) and the lasers, that was a reach for the sky moment and it was so cool that people were jumping and screaming like me. That was clubbing, that was fun, the music, the people and just losing yourself in the whole thing. Digweed and Sasha went through a lot of different genres for the next three hours, then they decided to go back to back for the final little bit till 4am (quitting time) because they had to pack up the entire place and ship it off to the next gig. Sasha and Digweed could not afford to miss the next gig because as they make it clear in the DVD, the sponsors made them sign agreements before the tour, that if they missed any gigs for any reason other than family emergencies or medical issues, they would be fined 150K per show, which is a heck of a lot of money for even deejays. Sasha and Digweed played back to back and then they dropped the key track that I remember, Age of Love’s brilliant Age of Love. The lights came on and people cheered and cheered and we then went home, it was a heck of a show and they brought it. See that was Delta Heavy, it showed how Sasha and Digweed had broken into North America and how the clubbers went to see them in droves.

Honestly the DVD will never capture the genius, the fun or even the memories completely because it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of us to see two deejays at the top of their games on a stage with lights and amazing lasers with lots of other like minded people just having the times of our lives. It will never be equaled or surpassed because as they say, the deejay did their jobs, they took us on a music journey, while we were left with wanting more and more and that’s real clubbing for ya!

Conclusion:
If you never saw the Delta Heavy or were crazy enough to miss it, get this, it does a decent job to show you what the tour was like or if you want to try to relive it in your mind again, get it. I personally think it can’t even make me remember the fun and joy that I experienced that night in April of 2002 but it does make you remember that you have to live for the now.
