One of Sweden's most consistent trance labels signed Dutchman Leon Bolier for their sixth release. It's already being played by Ferry Corsten, Armin van Buuren and Above & Beyond, so let's find out what all the buzz is about...
Leon Bolier is a versatile producer hailing from Holland, responsible for projects like Precursor (Spinnin') and Leon (Banshee). Together with his brother Bart, he also runs the Mindsensation and Subsphere aliases. All the projects bring forth their own distinct sound, ranging from techtrance from Precursor to progressively tipped tracks by Subsphere. Under his own name, Leon has made two remixes until now: one for Niklas Harding & Redshift's 'Pagoda' on Technoclub, and a more recent one for Mike Shiver's classic 'Feelings' which is to be re-released soon on Solaris Recordings. DJ support for 'My Precious' comes from an impressive array of jocks, so let's find out what were dealing with here.
A-side: Original Mix The building part of Leon's original blends a gorgeously deep bassline with some progressively tipped yet driving percussion. While the track's BPM is not too high, the overall feel still leans toward a very driving, elevating trancer because of a seriously amazing array of numerous effects, beautiful backing melodies and that immensely cool, almost sinister bassline. Coming at the breakdown, we get treated with a subtle wash-away of most of the elements, making place for an emotive, stabbing piece of chords which works out superbly well. You can just feel things building up to an astonishing climax, and you won't be disappointed one bit! The key feature here is a super-suddenly placed, yet fantastic riff that immediately takes you on an uplifting ride, generating an unmistakable trancy feel along the way. The phat bassline and deep, groovy percussion blend in with it in no-time, all in all making this one of them tracks that makes you run out of adjectives as a writer. This is one hell of a tune!
B1: Mesh Remix Jack Molenschot aka Mesh delivers the first remix on the flipside. The more progressive feel of the original does not come forward here, instead we get treated with a full on uplifting trance remix. From the start on, Mesh has implemented sounds and chords from the original during the build of his remix, bouncing onwards using straightforward percussion and a typical bubbling bassline. Several new melodies take care of a very elevating feel to be created during the build, especially when parts from the original's break are being implemented. I really dig what the remixer has done with a few of the melodies: first of all, the stabby, emotionally charged array of chords blazes its way through the breakdown, but is soon joined by a fast, high riff reminiscent of the 'sudden melody' from the original. The overall sound of this remix is quite sweet, but does retain a nice amount of energy. If you found the original too slow or too proggy, than this is a remix of your liking!
B2: O.C. Remix Özgür Can is the one behind this interpretation. He is known for his deep, inventive productions and that's exactly what we're getting here as well. Crunchy, bouncy percussion with a wicked structure and some high-toned synth take care of the very minimal, yet cool sounding build. The thing that's so good about this remix is the highly distorted version of the original's main riff that just keeps on going and going behind all the other elements. A phat, deep b-line is in charge of the lower frequencies of the track, while portions of subtly brought in sets of chords from Leon's original take care of the opposite side of the spectrum. While this remix doesn't feel too melodic during its first parts, it suddenly bursts out into a melodic proggy monster with its cool twists to all the original's melodies. Go have a listen, you won't be disappointed!
Conclusion:
This is one great release. The original combines a great bassline with an even greater set of riffs, making this one of the highlights of 2006 for me already. Mesh delivered a full on trancy remix, retaining all the melodies but in a totally different way. The O.C. Remix goes on in another style yet again, but certainly knows how to keep you entertained by its wicked distorted sounds and deep basses. A superb vinyl!
